Hey, guys I am going to pick a part to get some of the parts I need to swap out my 3-cyl for a 4-cyl engine. 1- I know I need the shift stabilizer rod. Do I also need the actual shifter rod from a 4-cyl, or will my shift rod work? 2- Are the early and late generation engine mounts the same for the 4-cylinders? i.e. a 1993 engine and trans mounts are the same as for say a 1998? Thank you Edited by Ephemeral Glade, May 10 2015, 01:02 AM.

That looks like a fun project. Unfortunately for me, I live in CA, so I would never be able to get it slogged and registered, so I envy you. At least they let me run my electric motors here.... |

I bet your electric cars are quicker for about 50 miles.

I see you are in California also, how are you going to get this car past smog? |

CA is short for Canada. |

Really, then that's good, no smog checks? Sorry for delays I'm watching Kevin do his thing.

the 1993 GTI is a legal swap, provided that the emissions equipment meets the requirements for the CA model of the chassis or later. |

Actually, what I originally imagined was a consumer version of the Ecomudder, with a torquey 1.6, but when I saw the opportunity, I jumped on it.

There is a page on team swift that details ALL the parts needed for the engine swap of geo to GT. I can't remember where the page was, if I get time I'll post up a link. Engine harness, mounts, trans mounts, the transmission has more robust gears in GT I think 4:10??? If I remember correct a fuel pump, hubs, and I can't remember on the brake booster regulated whatever it's called, for drum to disc conversion. Don't quote me on any of that. How to I not know these things when I'm doing this swap right now

i have done a few chronicals of twincam swaps to verts. i used to do pretty well documented project threads that included my wiring splice technique for running the dohc 16v g13b in a 3 cylinder chassis. there are really only 2 areas that are tricky - the splicing of the ignition circuit into a 3 cylinder chassis and modifying the transmission side mount to maintain axle geometry. ![]() |

Are the axle splines different on the hub end or at the differential end, or both? |

I used GA axles in my car, they have the same splines as Metros. GT outers have larger splines, hubs, bearings and brakes to tolerate all the extra horses. |
