Thank you. P.S. You should have seen it in 1974!

Having to smog my car irks me. But I remember being a kid in Burbank 75-80 and not being able to see the San Fernando valley from the school yard (on a hill side) because of the thick layer of brown smog. And my lungs hurting every afternoon.

It is amazing how relatively clean the air is today thanks to the smog abatement program. Still, when I lived in San Bernardino in 1990 you could see the smog rolling in from the West in the afternoon.

Often I'll be on the freeway choking on fumes and I can usually spot the car, something from the 70s or 80s. And I will try to get around them ASAP. And I wish the cops would confiscate those cars. And sometimes I'll see a big rig spewing clouds of diesel smoke and I wonder how they are allowed to get away with that.

It is actually bad, again. The advent of emissions controls changed the chemistry of our smog. It would have probably been THE solution if it weren't for the fact that our population has exploded. Just fifteen years ago there was a car parked about every third or fourth house, on my street. Now it is difficult to find parking.

Oh yea..I live in the Elinore Valley now and when I go towards LA, HOLLY SH-- . I swear to you that when I get close to the 91 and 15 frwy connection You can see the blanket of smog !! starting from corona and out toward the San Bernandino Mts. It's still bad , but I wouldn't want to go back to how it was before , that for damn sure!
I love 70's muscle cars but to be honest some of these cars of today even with their smog emissions , will still whip those cars. I know for a 100% that a 2015 Vette will spank the crap out of just about any muscle car....and it will do it with all the air bags, ac, anti-lock and cats on it .

But yea you did hit the nail on the head there about the population. What people don't understand when they talk about California is that we are the most populated state in the union. That's why we have the most electoral votes folks ! we are just over populated and we love our cars !
So even though we made cars cleaner we have 3 times more cars, so that's 3 times more pollution out of those tail pipes ! and that just defeated the whole effort. :shake

Pretty amazing isn't it. A V6 Mustang is pretty fast, these days. As a kid my lungs always hurt.

:scared

That comment worries me! V6 Mustangs are hated by the 'die hard fans'.

I just have issues with big government and smog is one of those things. That's all.

I'll back that up. I bought the wife a 2008 v6 Mustang, I think it has a performance exhaust on it but that's it (I suppose it could have a custom tune as well), and 100 comes on with great alacrity and ease. The governor is not much higher than that and it will get there in very short order. Without pushing it on the turn to enter a short freeway on ramp, I can hit the freeway at 100.

When I drive it (I hate the ergonomics ) I wonder why so many people have to have the bigger motor. Totally unnecessary, well except the grin factor.

Because people just want to brag about useless numbers. You said it has a governor just over 100 mph? That is kinda sad :( Too fast for roads, too slow for the track. But this is venturing into an off topic discussion.

I suppose the people who need a bigger motor are the same people who bench race on YouTube and care more about dyno numbers than ETs.

Don't they all?

I can't think of a time someone would realistically need more power than it has on the street . I totally get wanting it and being able to brag about it.

As far as the smog is concerned, I grew up in Bakersfield, you could see the brown cloud above the mountains all year long, and it was thick. Much better than it used to be, at least it was before I moved away.

The issue most of us had when they started really cracking down was that what was under the hood shouldn't matter if what comes out of the tailpipe meets the regulations.

Mustangs were (for me at least) pretty much the same from 1973-2004...poorly built gas hogs. Once they hit 80000 miles they turn to dust mechanically speaking. I really liked the simplicity of the earlier mustangs (1964 1/2 to 1973). After that they are just hunks of American ego. I really like the new 2015 turbo 4 cylinder, very interested in that ^o)

Actually we have a dust mandate also. You'll find signs at construction sites or garbage dumps, to call a # if you see dust coming from there.

Can't really comment of the Mustangs because I owned a 88 GT convertible and I loved that car ..but I sold it because it reminded me to much of my ex :whistle I might buy another in the future because I liked the way it drove ( But it couldn't turn worth a crap)
