Squeaking noise; Squeaking noise from left front wheel

Recently I have been getting a squeaking noise from my front driver side wheel. I notice it a little when I back up or when I press the brake pedal. It is not the usual horrible metallic sound heard when brake shoe rivets are rubbing a drum. I pulled the tire off and the rotors are not scored. So to give it a test I went to a reputable tire and brake store and they did a road test (they drove it around the block a couple of times and pulled the tire and looked in there). The guy said I needed pads and rotors. This afternoon I drove it down the road about 2 miles and when returning I can hear the squeak as I am driving. I don't know whether to believe the tire store as I never heard brakes make that sound. My intuition says the problem is bearings. The car has 116,000 actual miles and is a 1999 hatchback. I have no problem braking but the squeak stays the entire time I press the pedal like when stopping at a traffic light until the car comes to a complete stop. OK, now I need some opinions as what to do.

this could be the squealers on the brake pads, there is a curved piece of metal that is supposed to make a squeak sound when they are getting thin, its a self warning system.
i would check both sides out on the front and also check the rears for a good check up.

As Ronnie said, it probably is your brake warning.

But, there is a metal shield on the end of the axle which keeps dirt out of the knuckle. I once got a rock stuck in the shield and it made a horrible squeaking sound that became a screech on the freeway.

If it is just the squealers, new pads cost $40 and go on in about one hour, total.

Thanks guys, seems everyone thinks it's the pads. Are pads easy to replace on a 1999 front wheel?
