Just rode my bike out to pick it up. The idle surging is gone. This is the best it's run since I've owned it.
I'm super suspicious now. i don't believe in mystery fixes.

Well, FSM. Still probably going to give it a flush first, and my wheel bearing just arrived. I want that done before test driving further.

Is FSM localese for RTFM?

FSM= Factory Service Manual...... vs a Haynes or Chilton manual, which many feel is better suited to line the bottom of a bird cage! :lol

i think that my last trip to the local coin op car wash killed my alternator when i sprayed the dust out of the engine bay. :P

i know better but i also live on the edge. ;)

remember that finding an "open" in the TPS while testing blind is no cause for concern.
there is a idle contact, a full throttle contact, and a variable resistor in between.

at idle its on the idle contact.
in between idle and full throttle its a variable resistance.
at full throttle its on the full throttle contact.

Hurr Durr.

I tested it with the car off. :smackface

You know, what's weird is that it's been running better.

I did definitely determine the TPS jack is shady :rocker ... (and it's off to another topic now for *this* issue).

Standard Emissions TPS check (which checks for resistance) is battery disconnected. Upgraded Emissions check (for voltage) is ignition ON.

FSM = Factory Service Manual. You got that one. RTFM = well, you know that one too... ;)

And UTFM means actually USE The F'n Manual while you are actually doing the procedure... :D Open the FSM on your phone of print the applicable page(s) out and take them to the car to review to make sure you are familiar with each step and the expected/possible results before beginning, and do each step one at a time after reading it (or group of steps if they must be performed in a group).

Think of the FSM procedures as checklists. Checklists work extremely well to reduce the failure rate (mistakes/errors) due to the limitations of human memory as well as minimizing or even (virtually) eliminating the possibility of a simple brain fart. Years of research and study in the nuclear, aviation, and many other technical industries have proved how well they work when used properly, and how much people will make mistakes when they don't use them, or use them improperly. No reason why when we work on our cars we can't all benefit from what all that knowledge and experience has learned the (very) hard way.

What many people never realize is that even the most inexperienced mechanic can perform most procedures nearly as well or even just as well as the most experienced mechanic when they are using the same (and correct) procedure. The more experienced may be able to better sort through and choose "options" when they are occasionally presented, but most diagnostic procedures are simply Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, etc, until done.

There are no merit badges for being able to perform a procedure completely from memory or get lucky with a blind squirrel parts darts guess or bad home made rocket science, but there definitely is a lot of merit in getting your car running normally again with a minimum of wasted time, effort, and $$ because you were wise enough to refer to and use the extremely well thought out and developed FSM procedures. When the FSM is used properly as your primary reference and then the experience and knowledge of the forum (when accurate and correct) is applied properly to augment those procedures, it just don't get much better than that... :thumb
