Don't forget to read the comments, there are often just as good of stories down there, if not better, than the ones in the article itself!

Thanks for the links. Very entertaining. I've had the Pep Boys guy tell me my rotors were too thin. No thanks. My 4 mini "horror" stories. 1) About 15 years ago I took my Sprint to get smogged. The guy told me my EGR was clogged but he could clean it for $50. I say OK. Half hour later he goes to resmog and tells me the car is overheating. Tells me I need to fix the overheating before he can resmog. So I drive the car home, pop the hood, and see that the radiator fan switch has been crushed. Let me see, it was working when I took it to smog. I conclude the mechanic broke the fan switch while removing the EGR. 2) I go to some hole in the wall tire shop and end up buying 4 tires. I ask 3 times if the tires have been balanced. They tell me yes 3 times. On the way to work the car is shaking and vibrating like crazy. The rear seat is squeaking. What they had done wrong: A) They had over inflated one rear tire to 45psi. The other 3 to 32 psi. B) They had not balanced the rear tires. C) They bent one of the front rims. The bent rim took me 3 months to figure out. You could see the mark where the tire machine had dented the rim. 3) I had the clutch replaced. When I pick up the car, the clutch is chattering like crazy. Before leaving I complain about the chatter. The mechanic tells me this is normal. So I know he is BSing me. I drive the car that way for 3 years. After 3 years I decide to replace the clutch myself to see what they did wrong. And I find they had messed up the flywheel. When they tried to resurface it they introduced a lot of run out. they removed about 3 mm on one side and none on the other. 4) For about 6 years my left rear tire had been wearing unevenly, cupping. In those 6 years I have had 2-3 alignments and had the tire replaced 3 times. So about a month after getting new tires and alignment I see the left rear tire is cupping again. I'm pissed. I decide to figure out what the problem is. So after many hours of googling I figure out the tire actually has heel toe wear due to improper alignment. So I do my own alignment and see the left rear tire is way out of alignment. I dial it in. No more tire wear. But the thing is, what about those alignments I paid for? They always give you a piece of paper saying it is aligned. But, obviously they never aligned the rear. In the first 3 cases the mechanic broke something. They knew they broke something. And instead of telling me they play stupid and let me deal with the fall out. |

I have seen some really bad DIY repairs on houses, cars, and computers. You would be amazed at the incorrect substitutions people will make. I have seen SAE hardware replacing metric on many Metros. Sometimes people would be better off leaving the problem unrepaired. I once heard this story about some guy going down the road with his front wheel about to fall off. Two lug nuts remained and they were about to fall off. The wheel was wobbling and making all kinds of noise so someone pulled up next to them to let them know. The driver of the car started threatening them and telling them they were going to call the cops on them if they didn't stop. The other person called the cops on them as they were going down the road with a wheel about to fall off. Just after hearing this story I heard a car next to me that sounded like it had no oil in the engine. It then took off when the light turned green and noticed it was doing like 45mph down the road with a flat tire like nothing was wrong. My girlfriend told me I should tell them but I figured it was a lost cause and that they might be one of these nuts so I didn't do anything. My luck would have had it be one of those nuts. I have seen plenty of people driving on flat tires, some at high speeds, with them smoking and coming apart. They had to know this was going on but just kept driving. I mean there was enough smoke to make you think the tire was about to catch fire from the heat and friction. Conor |
