Gawker blog Truck-Yeah! just posted a great story about a man that has been living in a three cylinder geo metro for 150,000 miles.

The man's name is Herrmann and he himself has been keeping an impressive blog that includes some incredible pics of him and his metro.

This is great. Credit to Andrew P Collins for writing the story.

From the comments:

'HammerheadFistpunch'
"In the bell curve of overlanding there are 2 ends;

Left of the curve - The art of acquiring as much neat stuff to go on or in a neat truck

Right of the curve - Seeing cool places and being outside with a vehicle

And everyone one of us overlanders is someplace in the middle. Herrmann skews far right and its the part of the curve we should all be focused on.

Wow is all I can say, you can thank the politics for driving a man in this direction with how the sytem works. Can't do this you can do this b.s. with permist that vary from county to city. I can't even put a solar panel up to tickle charge my vehicle here without a permit yet drive 30 miles and it's legal is example. Slept in my 93 Geo 5200 mioes driving from Texas to Washington state and back, take back seat out with passenger seat built a wood frame for a bed and you can stretch out comfortable with feet towards windshield and head at back windows. I'm 6 ft and had no problem, underneath this bed I had all my stuff. When I slept at night I picked most populated areas, put a tarp over strapped down with short shotgun beside me ready if anyone moved the tarp cause windows were down to keep cool.

:hmm That or he just wanted to do it, so he did it. If you want to blame "politics" for a person embarking on a true adventure on a shoestring budget, in my book politics did something good for a change.

I'm not sure anything in the article gives us enough personal information or background to infer why he is doing his adventure in the way he is. :dunno

in my book, Herr Herrman is a cool guy. :thumb

thx for posting this jdc.

most of my 375k miles were added while traveling north america ... arctic circle to mid mexico. i lived in the metro for days and weeks at a time. i removed the passenger seat and slept there with storage under. i cooked out of the rear kitchen. i really like the tent fly setup! i made screens for my windows so i could be out of the bugs while rain or sun or snow made the outside too challenging overnight. i ate and slept in wonderful spots and almost never had to pay for 'camping'.

sometimes i threaten to sell my home and move back into the metro full time. it's very economical and quite doable if you have no family responsibilities. my guess is that the net use of fossil fuels living in the metro is possibly less than even simple living in a house.
