1957 Studebaker Wagon; ....bought one

So some of you might know, I buy a lot of cars. Anything from z71 silverados to 1972 Honda az600 coupes.....Well, I bought another fine automobile, a 1957 Studebaker Provincial Station Wagon! Yes it is rusty and beat up, but it is very cool. Plus it was only $300. It has the 259ci engine and manual trans.

I've never driven a "3 on the tree", I shifted this one through the gears and it seemed like it was missing one? I'm assuming the gear selector is something like R,N,1,2,3??? I would think there are 5 selections (Reverse/neutral) and there only seemed to be 4. I guess I will figure it out. I'm sure you old farts will set me straight there.

There is some glass smashed out, but if anything, I could make it a cool little rat rod. I'm pretty excited about it. I probably opened up a few more can of worms than I bargained for.

Oh yea, I also bought another Geo Metro. :cheers

Sounds good. I don't have the car yet......working out transportation. I also got some good old tires. I know 1 had a tube in it.

Long story short on the original property owner. He had over 100 old cars, Studebakers, Nash(s), chevys, Amc, yadda yadda. Before I could drive, my dad, brother and I went out there and saw all the cars with the owner. He was in his late 80s. I had my eye on a Gremlin and a 66 impala (no idea why). It was quite a bit away and my dad never had the drive/motivation to take us back. After several years, we assumed he died. We knew all of it would be gone. Well, A few days ago, I see this car on craigslist and go to look. It was that same property. The son said everything went dirt cheap. Some stuff to the crusher. The only thing left were 5 cars. 4 are sold/pending sold. There are all kinds of straight 8 engines, tons of parts for random cars, old oil cans, all kinds of cool stuff. Damn shame though about those cars.

Learned to drive on a "three on the tree" and my best advice is to relax, the linkage doesn't generally like being hurried and worst case can get bound up if you try to force it. For example when shifting from 1st to 2nd; shift to neutral and then virtually release the lever letting it "fall" through neutral then shift to 2nd. Good luck and have fun.

Thanks id....i usually dont rush it when i shift. I wont be in any hurry.

It doesnt run, but based on the old guy it has probably ran in the last 10 years. Should be easier to get running than a newer car.

Very nice! I had a '59 Lark with 259 for a while. Very good engines, very tough. They were made with a very tough alloy because Studebaker thought that the future of engine development was going to use very high compression ratios and they wanted to be ready. If you ever need machine work none on it, find someone who knows Studebakers or who is willing to follow instructions. The alloy is tough enough that it wrecks cutting tools ( maybe taking out the block in the process) if you take the regular sized cuts you are used to on say a Chevy or Ford V-8.

Here's a place for parts: http://www.studebaker-intl.com/

After Studebaker went bankrupt, a company called Newman-Altman bought one of the old factory sites and filled it with parts. I used to get brand new OEM parts for that '59 in 1997 from them. Brand new tie rods, in cosmoline, for way less than new car parts cost. Newman Altman went out of business in the early 2000s when the land they were on was sold to build a new jail. SASCO bought their stock out. Hope the pricing is still cheap.

That wagon is a nice looking car. You should fix yours up, move to California and learn to surf!!!

Mr Mojo Risin'

Love classic cars but hate column shifting. Very glad vehicles don't come with those anymore, learned to drive three on the tree in my dads 50-something pickup. Seems like a shifter just belongs at home on the floor and not where the windshield wiper controls go :news

Need pictures though!
