Automatic Metros?

Hey GMF I just wanted to get an opinion. There is a Automatic Metro on CL with 60k miles looks like its "rust free". I offered him my troubled MR2 and 500 but he wants the MR2 plus 1450. He listed the metro at 1950. Its a 91 and its auto. My questions to you guys is how are auto Geo's? I read that auto Festiva's arent too great they called them a "fun vampire". Where I live in PA there are alot of hills btw. I remember my mom's 79 celica getting stuck on a steep hill by the high school once. Do you think its a good deal? Long story short about the MR2 its a 88 hardtop with 83K miles and only a bit of rust on the front. Right now it needs brakes / timing belt / acc belt. and E brake cables and a overflow tank cap. It bogs down after warming up. Like it wont pass 3.5K RPMs. Oh and I don't know how to drive stick but I want to learn ( Thats why I bought the MR2).

Thanks guys! :thumb

EDIT its a 94 model. Any problems with this model year that I should know?

Here is a buyers guide.

Most important place to check on any metro in places that salt roads is the frame horns.

A 5 speed will get you the better mileage. Autos don't get the same.

if you are considering an automatic in a metro, i would highly suggest that you find the newest model 4 cylinder metro or suzuki swift available. ^o)

the 3 bangers rev really high in automatic trim, the g13bb from 1998 to 2000 are much better navigating highways and hills.

don't let that pirate rob you on that mr2 trade. :deal your mr2 is worth more than the metro.

Thanks ragtop. I thought as much. Its like he pulled that 500 from a scrap value or something. Would any year manual be ok for hills? And about the high revs for autos 3 cylinders that will only hurt MPGs right? Its not gonna eat itself after driving for a half hour or so?

I'll check the guide Bjet!

I think high revving 3 cylinders may actually be a bad thing for the motors. They are strange. I'd go with a 5-speed on a 3 cylinder if you plan on doing highway travel often. I have a 4 cylinder auto and it does 65-70 mph but you can definitely tell it is revving pretty high.

Ok I'll look for a 5 speed metro and learn stick on the MR2. I'll buy a metro when my Cavalier dies. XD Hopefully I can get one from PAMetroFixer when the time comes.

Two words to describe the automatics. "They suck". :lol That 95 in Roanoke VA might not be a bad deal if it's not rusted in the horns. Roanoke does get snow tho. I decided to use the 99 I had for sale as my daily. With all the new parts installed, it seemed kinda dumb to unload it. I'm sure PA framefixer would treat you right on one when the time comes, or maybe I'll have another one ready by then too.

jack of all trades, master of two

I put about 187,000 miles on my auto before it gave up....diff pin wore a hole thru the case, but other than that it still operated fine. screams on the highway at 75 mph!

Yeah I'm not going through with the trade. He buys and sells cars so he could be lying and trying to undercut me for the MR2 (now he dropped the value of my car down to $200 only cuz the acc belt broke.) :smackface He told me he drove up the Pocono mountains with it during a blizzard and it "handled like a champ." I dont think my Cavalier could do that. I always hear that Prius C cant do that. My buddy got stuck in the mountains with his Prius. Awesome! Hopefully this MR2 will be fixed or out of my hair by then so I wont PM you saying "wanna trade for a MR2?" xD.

When you got a person that buys and sells vehicles you got the upper hand in negotiating when you know the vehicle you are buying inside and out. Point out non existing problems and offer lower in cash only, don't go with cash in hand when showing up a first time. Just take your time surf CL and you will find the right one even if you have to drive 200 miles to get it, it's worth it. I have done that to all my vehicles and in my fleet as I call it I have a Geo I bought $500, Ranger $500, F450 $3000 and a donor F450 $1000. The Ranger got rebuilt by me and purrs the F450 is diesel that has made its money back 10 fold and the Geo runs but needs a overhaul. They all are 5 speeds an automatic won't last as long, harder and more expensive to repair, you can't push them to jump start them, you get less mpg and last but least a radiator is usually more expensive cause it has to accept the transmission.

Now Here's My Take On This! Don't Listen To All That Automatic Bashing BS. My 1990 4 Dr Automatic Is Still Going Strong At 289.000 Miles Plus. One Note On Them, Don't Overfill Them Or They Will VOMIT Out The Excess Fluid On The Highway. Trust Me I Know.

I've owned a few autos. You still get 30s for mpg and they are a little more gutless.....
