Metros are great cars: Cheap, cheap to work on, easy to work on. They are getting a little old but for a first car they are still a good choice. Especially if you intend to work on it yourself. Take the time to find a good one, especially a rust free one. You're way better off with a manual trans car too. It's almost always better to spend more to buy a good one that to buy a $500 POS and try to fix it. You'll see stories on the forum about guys that buy $500 beaters, then fixing it up cheap and driving it for 100K miles. It's rare but can happen. You have to know a good car from a bad one but that takes experience and is still a risk.
I remember one post from a guy who bought a $150 Metro with a bad transmission, took it home, bought a transmission out of a pick-n-pull, swapped it out over the weekend and had a good car for less than $500. I also remember posts from someone convinced that a 20 year old metro was going to be a reliable daily driver, bought the car, it broke down and they were in a hard spot because they couldn't afford to fix it and had to get to work.

Be smart, take as long as it takes to find a good one, understand that it's an old car and will require time and money and you'll be OK. And don't get an automatic.

Welcome to the forum!

Your first car? Just make sure it has working AC and heat. That's the stuff that drives the ladies crazy.

The buyers guide is pretty solid.

Check for RUST!

Most everything else can be dealt with.

If it's a pre 95, always look at the right front (passenger side) suspension mounts. This was a problem on these geo's and could be rusted out on what looks like a mint car.
It's weldable if you're handy or know some one, and it's a good bargaining chip to knock down price.
I just got a 94 with 38,000 original miles for $500 because it was "un-drivible". A couple hours welding and I got a car for the next 100,000 miles.

First it starts with one, then you think I am pretty happy with this one but I want more. Then you get a second and on it goes from there.

Then you start getting parts of them powdercoated.

and the cost never ends...
