Picked up Elsie yesterday. The last shitty car I ever buy!

Well, I picked up the new car yesterday. It is a 1999 Chevy Metro 3/5 with A/C, single female owner since new, and only 53,800 miles. I paid $2500 for it on Ebay and drove 12 hours round trip to pick it up. I'd post some pictures but I haven't really taken any yet. I will post this so you can get an idea of what I have (minus the nice wheels, tint, and black door guard):

Dave Ramsey says "Drive like no one ELSE so later you can drive like no one ELSE." I'm calling her ELSIE and this will be the LAST shitty car that I buy. Hopefully it will last until I retire in 7 years. I was going to keep my red '94 3/5 but with 136,000 miles I figured an 80K mile upgrade would be nice.

So, is she really shitty? No, not really but she is just a $2500 car. What is wrong:

- Tires are out of balance and I have a 45MPH shimmy
- No floor mats (not a huge issue but it is $40 or so)
- Fan selector switch is broken (the standard ty-wrap fix should work)
- Dents in the hood
- Hubcaps need painted
- No idea of history on fluids, belts, filters, rotor/cap, etc
- Lots of stains on the carpet/seats
- Shocks are a little bouncy. Might need to cut the springs
- Bumpers are beat to grey not black

What's good

- GREAT mileage for a '99
- Interior is mostly intact (just needs some TLC)
- Car runs just fine. Doing mostly 75 on I-95 for hours yesterday and she held up

The plan is to sell my 136K mile '94 to recoup most of the money and do a little work on this one. As I said, I will drive it (hopefully) for the next 7 years and then I am finished with Metros. I enjoy the community here but I would be lying if I didn't say I wouldn't rather have a BMW M5.

Congratulations!

My favorite lines from your review:

>- No floor mats (not a huge issue but it is $40 or so)
Deal breaker? :lol

>- Shocks are a little bouncy. Might need to cut the springs.
I'd love to take my car to the mechanic and tell him "my shocks are bad, how much to cut the springs"? Just to see his reaction.

Oh, both window cranks were missing the knob part (I think a common problem with them breaking) BUT I found them in the cubby holes in the door. I ended up putting them back on with screws/nuts/washers/loctite. I'll do a writeup on it later.

Might be struts are worn out for the bouncing, I wouldn't do no spring cutting, if anything add a coil spring so you still retain the travel distance before hitting the bump stops on hard bumps or better yet for a oh $#!£ moment when you hit a deep pot hole.

I love metros but they are kind of shitty to be fully honest. I bought several toyota corollas recently and they all run fine at 150000+ miles with AC and are getting comparable mpgs to my 4 cylinder swift without feeling like a dilapidated go-kart :news More room to so I will be buying no more metros from this point forward

I have enough loot to buy a bmw, but it's metros forever for me. My wife and and I have a 2010 bmw, but this was her doing. We are polar opposites with cars, so we are always making jabs about each others cars. Some of my electric metros far exceed the cost of her bmw, but I would still rather drive an old beat up gasoline metro with 1/4 million miles on it than a bmw...

Rmc, congrats on buying a nice looking ride. I absolutely love it.

Got to have AC in Texas so I understand your feelings there, up here we just roll windows down and the AC is as strong as you drive and how high up in the mountains you are. I use to live in Beaumont with humidity part of Texas.

We all will somewhat patiently await the real pics of the pos. :lol

So is it just "buyers remorse"?........ You seemed pretty happy about the purchase in your topic last week. Was it not as nice as advertised? You knew you were buying another shitty Metro right?
