Verifying people's statements

I sure hope you guys do this. When someone makes a claim that doesn't sound right, I usually double check it. I don't double check to put someone down, it is usually for my own knowledge or to stop a future problem.

Let's say for an example parts on cars. Someone says "These headers will fit on your truck". I will probably double check if I don't know for sure.

Hell, it can run from anything with politics, business ownership, finances, automotive....anything really. Now, there are some people in certain subjects that I usually won't double check. I just know they are right and if they aren't 100% sure, they will let you know. One problem I see is that the people I don't consider an "expert" talk as if they know things as fact, when really it's their opinion.

Now my problem is when I found someone is wrong, I let them know. Usually I provide proof. No biggie, we both learn something. In the Military, we did that and moved on. In College (at higher levels), we would do that. Everyone gains more knowledge and the original person doesn't sound like a fool. If I ever say something as fact and it is wrong, I want someone to tell me I'm wrong.

Apparently some people completely hate it and get really defensive about it like you called them a pos, when in reality it was just constructive criticism. In my experience, the less educated a person is, the more likely they are to get offended by it. (*less educated doesn't necessarily mean college education vs hs diploma)

Anyone else notice this or deal with this?

Yes, I've seen/dealt with people that get mad if you point out they're wrong.

I'm in the same boat as you - If I am wrong about something, TELL ME. I want to LEARN. I want to KNOW.

Part of it is in the approach - telling someone respectfully they're wrong, vs, "OMG! You idiot!"

Yep!

The pathetic thing is my approach is always the same. Maybe my approach is set up for a certain kind of person?! idk. I never say it in a disrespectful way....at the same time, I don't overly sugar coat crap. I just get to the point, then it's over and no biggie. There is nothing wrong with being wrong. Everyone is wrong about something, probably several times a day or week. I hate being wrong so I appreciate it when someone lets me know.

Another thing that drives me crazy is the phrase "they say". Hell, I use that phrase, but try to limit it because it's always in regards to something that no one seems to really know. "They say pressing a piece of popcorn on a cut will make it heal correctly....". Who the fuck are "they". Why don't we just ask a dermatologist, doctor, or just test it ourselves? I think everyone is guilty of saying this though. :lol

It is even worse when you are young and trying to tell someone twice your age they are wrong.

At my work I had two of the best trainers anyone could ask for. Together they had about 50 years experience working on the same set of tools. I spent about a year and a half or two years working and picked up a ridiculous amount of knowledge, so when I hear other co workers talk about something and its 100% WRONG I try to explain the correct solution and why.

My best reply to trying to help someone was " you think your 2 years experience is better than my 25 years? " I replied back and said No I never said that, but I told you exactly how and why you were wrong and the correct way to do the job and you blew me off. :stoner

I'm very careful about giving advice on anything if I am not absolutely sure that my advice is not 100% factual and almost always based on personal experience. Often times there is more than 1 way to solve a problem. I which case, multiple, oposing, viewpoints could both be correct.

When statements are made based on opinons or faith and there is no way to prove or validate your statements that's when things get interesting!

It is pretty obvious if a part is wrong and will not fit. Not too easy or likely that you can prove someone is wrong about personal beliefs.

Sometimes your delivery doesn't matter. People have a lot of ego, and pride rolled into their opinions. For them it is not about the facts. You see it even on this forum. Their hallmark is the ad hominem attack as a response.

I do, but I'm often times on the receiving end of wrongful facts. I can drop it, particularly on the internet. What really gets me jiving is when someone calls me out on an opinion and substitutes their own opinion as FACT. That happens a lot between me and some of my younger friends.
