Windows 10 for free?

Does anyone here currently run Windows 7 on their laptop or home computer? If so are you getting the little window logo next to your wireless signal logo asking you to upgrade to Windows 10? I looked it up and it says that some windows 7 users are eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 10 at no cost and I'm eligible. I'm not going to because I actually enjoy 7 but I just thought it's weird they're giving it away for free. Anyone else get this on their computer?

I'm not upgrading because if it's anything like windows Vista or Windows 8 then it sucks :shake

Reasons to avoid this:

1. It is free. Windows never gives away a good product for free.

2. Where did Windows 9 go?

3. Windows 7 is highly optimized.

Yeah, we got the pop-up.
From what I read, you have a year from the release date to install the update... if you want to.
But you have to register first.
I doubt we'll do it, 7 is great.
If I had Windows 8 on anything I'd probably upgrade that, I don't like Windows 8.

Not so fast

That's news to me. Microsoft has planned to offer 10 as a free upgrade to 8 users all along, but I never knew they were going to do it for 7 users as well.

I bought 8 when it first came out, and it was on sale for $40. The Metro tile interface is a total clusterf*#@ for desktops, and I've never found anything even remotely useful on that side of the operating system, but the desktop side and the performance behind it was mildly improved enough to convince me to keep it.

Here's what I believe the catch is: in a year or so, you'll no longer be able to "buy" Windows. Instead, you'll have to pay a monthly or yearly fee to "subscribe" instead. Adobe has already done this with much of their software. You can't buy Photoshop anymore, only "subscribe" for $20 a month. If you have an older version of Photoshop, you can still keep it subscription-free. That's what Microsoft is trying to avoid now. Get people away from the version they won't be extracting subscription fees for.

Scratch just pointed out a cycle that has been happening for awhile. It cycles between unlimited use and renting. Some things have stayed in the renting category and I deem them, more often than not, useless. I don't care for subscriptions. If I buy it, it should be mine.

I'm running 10 on all my machines right now it is much better than 7 or 8. The upgrade will roll out July 29 for everyone that takes the upgrade. If you don't take the free upgrade the first year it will cost about $79 for the upgrade after that. They don't do subscriptions on windows, just the one time upgrade fee.

I like to call Win 8.1 the " Aw, but baby, I was thinking of you the WHOLE TIME" edition.

I had to work on my mom's 8.1 box for her last year. Honestly, once I got used to it and reconfigured it for more of a classic WIndows feel, it wasn't that bad to deal with. In fact, it was the easiest time she's had yet using Windows. Once I got over my 8-hate, it was OK enough to deal with. Annoying, but not too bad.

I used OSX Macs and Windows boxes side by side for years. I finally gave up on the Macs when I could no longer afford their upgrade cycle (I used them for audio work).
I feel like we've finally crossed a threshold where modern Apple has more contempt for their customer base and employees than MS. I'd have used them if I could, but, man, Itunes, walled gardens... ugh.

Before inevitable evangelical arguing ensues, I would like to point out that *Windows and OSX *both* suck for different reasons, and I love them and hate them both, again, for mostly different reasons. There are simply some things Apples work better for, and are easier to deal with logistically... easier to deal with, and much less flexible and more expensive than the PC.
My Macs never had OS problems, period. Ever. They'd break, but if you buy the Apple Protection Plan, it used to pay off. It was worth it.

Configuring Windows for pro audio was a nightmare I fought for years, often spending far more time fighting hardware and software conflicts than working. I had to sell a really special vintage synthesizer to afford my Mac, but at least I was working again. But, again, Apple has plenty of problems, as well.

OSX users are not a bunch of elitist snobs, although a lot of elitist snobs use them, and their snobbery tends to drown out the rest of them.
Don't even get me started on how smug *both user bases can be*; again, for different reasons.

Man, Windows smuggery drove me nuts. i never in my life ran into such a bunch of dang smug know-it-all-geeks as the typically left-brained jerks that would argue with me constantly about things like "but you don't need to do that with your computer for audio. Why do you need to do that? Whoever worked on this last was an idiot (hrmm, every single time...)". Repeat ad nauseum.
And Linux guys were often the worst of the PC snobs.

Somewhere between XP and 7, Windows did OK. I like 7 a lot (although native audio configuration and operation -not pro audio, that's different- is a PITA).

Every year or two, I tried to use different versions of Linux. They've finally got some versions of Ubuntu that are so dumbed down even my computer-inept dad sat down and used it immediately with no issues. If you have a spare computer, I *really suggest* trying to boot a version of Ubuntu (I suggest "Xubuntu") from what is called a "live disk". You can try it from a DVD without installing it.

I just went through a pile of six machines installing it on them instead of Windows so that I could use a non-pirated operating system... and because I couldn't get any of them to work with Windows due to their age. Every %#%#** one of them is working now.

I didn't have to install a single driver, and I didn't have to do anything weird. There's a really brief manual on what applications to use if you're coming from Windows so that the transition is easy. It tells you the differences, and explains the basic stuff.
You pretty much *never ever have to see a text entry box if you don't want to*. If you get to the point you do, well, its usually because you've progressed a bit.

When I use my Windows boxes now, I find myself startled every time I have to do the Windows-about-to-crash-or-catastrophize-cringe, because * I never encounter it anymore*. I never properly appreciated how much flinching I did until I realized I hadn't booted into Windows for a few weeks after not doing so.

It's not just for eggheads anymore. Please give it a chance if you're sick of the suffering. I mean, I literally plugged in random scanners and they worked. It couldn't handle my 15 year old $40 Lexmark, but it's a special case. If you use specialized hardware like audio interfaces, you may have trouble and need to do the egghead stuff yourself. BUT... that's why I am running dual-boot. Which took exactly zero effort to set up. I boot into Windows when I need to use Windows, and it works the same as ever... easy-peasy.

I do not suggest that it's time to abandon Windows. But I now strongly suggest to nearly everyone that will listen to me long enough that *you can now walk away from the endless suffering*. I don't get Viri. My system works. When I need help, there aren't a bunch of solutions twisted by corporate self-interest and Russian malware trolling sites.

All the techs are working together to make it easier to use, and are functional - not to get you to buy more software.
The difference is *startling*. I had been fighting a pile of trash-rescued machines every winter for the last three years. *My entire hoard now works after a 30 minute install on every machine*. Even the motherboards from like, 2004. NO DRIVER INSTALLS. No hunting obsolete drivers, either.
We have a PC in the dining room. We have one for TV in the living room. I have one on my workbench for doing electronics, bringing up calculators, and using schematics and manuals on demand. Oh, it's also a stereo ; )
I have a bunch of laptops I pulled from the trash... every one not physically damaged now works flawlessly, and with nearly zero effort required to get them that way.

Installing it is easier than eating ice cream. OSX and Windows should be ashamed of themselves. I have never been so offended by their installation and configuring process as when I got throught the 3d machine or so.

NONE OF THEM CRASH OR LOCK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:rocker :rocker :rocker :rocker :rocker :rocker :rocker :rocker :rocker :rocker :rocker

So, I guess *I* just evangelized. But, if you're sick of the suffering, boot a live Xubuntu DVD. I find it easier and smoother than regular Ubuntu, but your mileage may very- Xubuntu is just a trimmed down Ubuntu for better performance, and with a slightly different interface. It's great for older machines.
Crank down the graphics features to speed it up a bit if it's too slow.

Seriously. Try it now. It's matured. Anybody can use it now. And use it side-by-side safely with Windows, as well. No more bizzare configurations\ problems Einstien himself would find difficult.

Where working on an Apple or Winbox is like working on a hybrid, Xubuntu is as difficult as installing a battery in a Metro. I am not being patronizing. For reals.

I need to shut up now.

I'll admit it. I agreed to Guinea pig-motize myself. I have my Windows 7 disc, so if the menacing overlords try anything shady, I am covered.
It is a sign of a failing economy IMHO. I worked at a bike store that started to demand that we sell memberships to people. It isn't enough anymore to just sell a product, or a one-time service. To keep growing in a stale economy, you have to secure a relationship, and not just an individual sale. I am am not scarededed of the Dark Overlords. They can take all the lint they can find in my pockets.

Easy. 7 8 9.

As I understand it:

Windows 8 was unpopular largely due to the new "tiles" interface. MS sort-of listened to the complaints and announced they were going to make Win 9 more user friendly/popular...
by adding more tiles.

This was not well received.

Has anyone seen that ad they put out a while ago for the new IE? The one that sort of implied "Internet Explorer. Uh, we're actually trying now, sorry about that!"
