Convertible Metro deemed the worst car of the 90's; Metro Vert the worst car of the 90's

Not so fast

Sure, another trash-talk listicle. Some things I can agree with, though. Like #9. We had one of those Discoveries at the body shop where I used to work once. All I had to do was pull it up to the bay and clean it out. I hit the button to unlock the doors. Every door except the driver's door unlocks. So, I put the key in the actual door lock and turn. Nothing. I have to climb in from the passenger side and pull the lock up from the inside. Finally, I try to start the thing. Nope, battery's too weak. I get the jump box and hook it up. When I do, the alarm goes off, with me standing directly over the horn. :spaz :banghead

I hated that thing so much, and it was only in my life for two hours.

And how about #2? The one that somehow convinced America that ungainly, ugly, top-heavy trucks made good family cars? Even without the early tire issues, if you have to make an emergency maneuver at 80mph on the interstate, you don't want to be driving one of these things. I've seen it happen. All because people want to pretend they're rugged and outdoorsy.

I once read an article comparing the vert to the Miata of the time. They actually gave the vert really good praise. For the money, it was a great value. Of course the Miata was rated better if money was no object but they had respect for the vert.

Conor
:hmm I can see the line being drawn between the two. I wouldn't mind a Metro Vert if it was just me cruising around. I'd rather drive it than the Miata to and from work purely for savings.

Never thought the NSX was as super as the supercars they were built to compete against. I do remember a converstation with a co-worker in the early 2000s. He's 10 years younger than I am and there was an NSX for sale locally that he was drooling over. I looked at him like he was crazy and tried to nudge toward a 4 speed, 454 'vette I knew of for the same price. He looked at me like like I was crazy. we just had to disagree on that one.
Maybe he was anticipating a corner or two in his future.

:hmm My Honda would not be the car for you. No sway bars and camber is nonexistent. Takes corners like a school bus.

As I started down the list is was thinking Ok, I can see that for one reason or another, but at about the middle of the list I started to wonder how they were picked.
I had a new two door 1992 Grand Am, loved it. It was not the GT but had the V6/auto with the GT suspension (I think) it was bright red and had the larger wheels/tires (for the time) and was a blast to drive, kept it 7 years. I will have to say it was not all the reliable and I did get ride of it because I had no faith it was a good long term car. Sold it with just 70K miles @ 7 years. I did a full tune up every year (best friend worked at a GM dealer and got me parts for cost, bout half off, so I took advantage of it every year not knowing how long it would last) plugs/wires/rotor/cap/fuel and tranny filters/thermostat/drain fill rad. Oil/filters at 3k and did the shocks/struts at 55k again dealer parts for cheap. He also under coated just the bottom very neatly with the GM clear undercoat, was top of the line materials just before everyone quit undercoating cars due to the better warranties and metal treatments at the factory. Hated to get rid of it but didn't figure it would last. Shame it didn't have Honda reliability I would have kept it forever...
I would drive T3's red vert anytime with no shame!

I had a 98 sunfire that had over 290,000 miles on it when I sold it.

It is the same body series as the Caviler. Changed the alternator 3 times and the AC compressor twice. Just normal maintenance and oil changes every 2000 miles.

I will learn from them...all vehicles have their good and bad points, it really comes down to how well they are taken care of and what your willing to deal with...with one execption...sorry guys...but the Yugo was just :shit

There are always a few bad models out there. A couple that really stand out are the Chrysler 2.7L Intrepids, Seebrings, and the like. I knew several people with them and they seemed to self-destruct even if you took care of them. That engine was a perfect storm of failures. Had one or two been corrected, the engine probably wouldn't have been all that bad.

How about the Ford Split-port engines used in a lot of their smaller cars? That seemed like another throwaway.

I don't know of any current production models that are this bad though. Some are ugly like the Nissan Cube or not that practical or efficient like the Smart but it isn't going to be a terrible car besides that.
