Using Automatic Starter in 5 speed?; What is the deal?
Topic Started: Jun 5 2015, 04:21 PM (586 Views)

My starter quit not long ago and I replaced it with one out of a junk car I had crushed. The donor car happened to be an automatic. I understand the starters are different and yes, I found that new replacements have a different part number for each version.

I have another spare starter out of a junk 5 speed but this one is installed and works, not that it would be a big deal to swap them. What is the big difference and should I be worried about having this automatic starter in my car?

I had one that I did that way years ago. Never had any problem with it.

I got a spare starter from an automatic. It would be good to know I could use it in my 5 speed someday if needed without worrying about stripping the flywheel teeth or breaking something!

the one it shows on that link is for a 1986 chevy sprint auto. I bought one from rock auto a few months back. NIPPONDENSO; Offset Gear Reduction very fast turning over.

the offset gear reduction starter is the one i have preferred for years. it will turn the highest compression suzuki g family engine over with authority at 300 rpm. ;)

i used one on the twincam in my red vert. the only caution is that the gear reduction starter used on a twincam requires modification of the rear intake manifold bracing arm.

Thanks. This is good to know. IT looks like the auto spec starters are beefier than the manual ones so my swap is OK but not always the other way around. I used the spacer plate from my old starter off the 5 speed so guess I am good to go!
