Just saw this ad in my town.

I would buy it sight unseen based on my experience with the Firefly. Rust isn't a big problem here.

Yeah, but 325,500 Km (201,810 mi) may be a problem - but not for a $300 parts car. (Asking $400 would probably take $300.) :dunno

"Runs well, a bit loud, highly fuel efficient. Willing to trade for late 90's Ford Explorer transmission also. "

What is "well" and loud? A hole in the firewall, bad carpet, knocking, ticking, no Catalytic Converter, an exhaust gasket? Could be cheap, could cost your child's university tuition. ;) :lol

My wife has her own 1996 Geo Metro. :)

Would be worth it for a clean/rust free chassis if you are up for a rebuild plus exhaust whatever, but people normally don't sell cars that "run well" for $400 unless they had a mechanic tell them it needs engine.

And I also don't expect them to be honest about that when the list it.

Caveat Emptor

I saw ads for others today that looked nice.

A 4-door 1990 Swift for $750 with 220 000km

A 1992 Metro for $700

There seems to be more out here than I thought.

4 doors are surprisingly roomy. We used to make the 16 year old, 6'3" stepson ride in the back when we had ours. Of course he was skinny and pretty bendy back then.

If I understand correctly, the bulk of North American Metros and swifts were built in Canada. CAMI in Ontario I think. MetroSwifts are sort of domestic cars for Canada so I'm not surprised that they are common there.

THey come and they go, but I'd say this one has run through it's usable life with that many KMs on it. Something is going to give, and at this point, it could be anything and everything. But if i wanted a cheap beater, I'd go for it, and drive it until the floor pan drops out.

Did you happen to kill it on the highway just outside of Victoria? I saw a blue metro parked on the curb, ass dragging low, on my way to work.

I obviously noted that you were here in Victoria, but I didn't notice you had a '95 firefly (previously?) before. Crazy coincidence!

This is my first time with one of these cars. I kind of fell into this by accident. I was originally just looking for a cheap beater because the $600 Sunfire I had been driving for a year and a half developed some unresolveable mechanical issues inside the engine. I found that I really care about this little car and now I am motivated to work on it. It's a good change in me.

So, you're driving the '95, not the cheap '92 mentioned in your first post?

Oh yes - I got the firefly for $380 and have had such an awesome time with it I was cruising the ads to see if I could luck out on a similar one. I need a windscreen for one thing. A parts car might be a cost effective way to score one. And less rusty wheels.

Since the rust that does exist on this Firefly is mostly confined to the wheels, you can get a great illustration of what a very brief exposure to road salt can wreak - in the rust you can actually see the outlines of the three oblong openings in the original-but-now-very-much-long-gone wheel covers. This car originally hails from the mainland I believe.
