Anyone have a good value estimate on Chevy 350 short block w/ 4 bolt rods?; Going to sell on CL or similar

Ok, thanks. The casting number says it was used in a truck from 1980-1985. What does that tell you? I guess if it had been reworked, the freeze plugs and the like would be just metal color and not painted.

probably from a 3/4 or 1 ton truck, every one equipped with a 350 and there were millions had that same block, and crappy 882 casting heads.

So the stock heads were crap on these? I guess it isn't such a bad things that I don't have the heads then.

882 casting were prone to crack, decent open chamber head with 1.94 intake valves, but prone to crack. 487 or 441 was a much better casting with the same open chamber 1.94 design. but most guys do not even fool with factory heads anymore, unless they are vortec heads or something aluminum.

That probably came from a 1/2 ton 2WD truck. Most of the 4WD and HD trucks came with forged cranks. The newer one-piece rear seals have far less problems with leakage than the old style. The 010 designation mentioned earlier signifies a higher nickel content.

actually no 010 is the last 3 digits of the casting number, I think some high nickle ford blocks have 010 cast on them maybe that what you mean? and I have pulled quite a few 80s 350 out of 3/4 and 1 ton trucks, none had forged cranks which were very uncommon after the late 60 to early 70s at least in chevy motors..

I hate to say it but I am about ready to scrap this sucker! The calls I have gotten are just outrageous. More are offering less than scrap value which is basically an insult if you ask me so I just laugh at them.

Anyway, I have it listed on eBay for a starting bid of $200 and a buy it now of $400, local pickup only. http://www.ebay.com/itm/301675556009?ssPageName=STRK:MESCX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1554.l2649

If it doesn't sell there, anyone here that might be interested can have it for $200, otherwise I am sending it to the crusher when I have a full load of scrap again which will likely be within a month or so. It is safe under cover out of the rain for now but it is being stored in the bed of my S10 under the camper. I figure it is easier to go meet someone and drag it into the back of their truck. With the people I encounter, there is no way I would meet them at my house.

In my area, your price is kinda high. Unless you guarantee that the block is in good shape, will not require line boring or other expensive machine work in order to be used, then you're basically selling a pig in a poke. The heads are not desirable, especially without more expensive machine work to increase their function. $200 is not unheard of , but most folks desire a one-piece rear seal. Used engines are usually a crap shoot, with prices following those odds.

yeah even if you only get a bill for it that's more than scrap price, right? it only worth what someone is willing to pay. if I was local and in the need I would pick it up, but I am not. :(

I *MIGHT* consider $100 if I was in a decent mood and hadn't had too many stupid calls that day but that would be a last ditch. When the price gets to $50 or even less, this is basically scrap. Even if a little more than scrap, then there is a the hassle of dealing with the BS and it isn't worth it. Off it goes to scrap.

It is funny but several here indicated that $400 was a very fair price for the condition it was in (see this thread). I end up dealing with some of the dumbest people or those who think they are entitled to everything and then I just decide it is easier to scrap it. Half the time they say they are coming and then don't show and crap like that.

I did say it was worth 350 or so, but the CL economy is another story. a bunch a illiterate bums as you well know, all of them want to seriously low ball everything. and you don't want most of them any where near your house. now if you know a chevy guy it may be another story.. let him tank and inspect it before he pays..

Illiterate stupid rejects describes the CL crowd pretty well. Yes, I don't want them anywhere near my house. I will leave the engine under cover until the eBay auction runs its course or I need the truck, then it gets transferred to a load of scrap I am collecting and that isn't protected from the elements. It will rust up quickly once that happens.

The deal is I don't have the room to store it out of the elements long term and dealing with the CL types just isn't worth my time. I have scrapped several items rather than deal with them.
