Rim Size is 14x5.5 on a 92 vert, what would the best size tire to get as close to my speedo not being terribly off? |

I ran 175/65r14 tires and a brown speedo gear from a 95+, it was right on by my gps. |

It's not likely you will easily find anything in a practical size that will fit well on the 14x5.5 " rims and come close to matching up with the original white speedometer gear, so changing to a brown gear would be my first suggestion. 175 65 14 with a brown gear will produce a .9% under reporting error, which translates into roughly a 1 mph error once you get up to 60 mph. Which in practical terms may be too small to even notice, especially when you consider the possibility of mechanical indicating error offsetting the error. Or it could add to it and make it slightly worse. If you leave the white speedometer gear in with 175 65 14s, it will produce an 8.6% under reporting error, which means it will read roughly 3 mph low @ 30 mph, 4 low @ 45, 5 mph low @ 60, 6 mph low @ 65, 7 low @ 80, etc 165 65 14 also with a brown gear would produce a 1.4% over reporting error, which would result in roughly a 1 mph indicating error from 40 to 110 mph, again not considering the possibility of mechanical error in the system. |

I'd go 185/60-14 myself. Spot on with a brown gear, and excellent traction. Too much for snow, if there's any chance of driving your vert in the snow, then go with the 175's. |

Good recommendation for both the rim width and the diameter. And quite a few choices seem to be available on Tire-rack.com, tires-easy.com, etc.

185/60 shouldn't scrub with a 1 inc drop? |

You should not have any tire rub issues with that size tire and 1" drop.

It's the factory size for the GTi, won't rub unless your wheels are way different in offset from the factory specs. |

They look good to me, and look pretty good too. You're probably going to need different lug nuts with any aluminum wheel. |

well with an automatic im not sure, but with a manual, the speed is always off the same, it doesnt get worse the faster you go? nothing changes, the gear doesnt change, the 5 speed trans doesnt change ? this is mechanical, so it should always be off the same amount in any gear due to the output of the final drive? i dont know it all, but to me its always off the same amount??? can you explain how it gets worse the faster you go? i talked to a mechanical engineer and he says its the same because of the final drive? things that make you go hmmm just asking ok? redline |

I was going to do 185/60 that Woodie recommended, but the place didn't have them so I went with 185/65. Looks pretty good so far to me, not sure why that pic looks off to me. I also, FINALLY, replaced my Metro headlights with Swift headlights so the front looks so much better now. The vert isn't my main transportation now so I can actually do serious work on it and not worry about it taking more than a day to finish

It's off by a percentage. If it's off by 10% (that would be huge, but it makes the math easy), then at 10 mpg you'd be going 11, when your speedometer said 50 mph you'd be going 55, and when your speedometer said 70 mph, you'd be going 77. In this case it's going to be 3.2% off with a brown gear, and 9.4% off with the stock gear. 60 on the speedo will be 65.7 in real speed. All of these numbers are theoretical, in the real world nothing is this precise. Tires can't even be trusted to be the size they say they are, there are variations. If your speedometer is within 2 mph of being right, you're doing pretty well. Edited by Woodie, Jun 29 2015, 03:46 AM.
