for the most part things were up off the floor. the panic mode didn't kick in until it was clear that electronic stuff and electrical power strips were going to take water. i protected the appliances the best i could.

this was the second time in 16 years that the basement has gotten water like this and by far, this was the highest i have seen it.

my take away from this is that i should have a dewatering pump ready. my house is pretty much up on a hill and it doesn't have a sump pump. it has a central floor drain that runs into an underground 8" clay pipe that leads to a buried 2500 gallon concrete cistern. the cistern has an 8" overflow pipe running in a tile to a ravine, exiting at least 25 feet below the grade of my basement.

it rained so heavily and for so long that it filled that whole system and overwhelmed the 4" floor drain. i had ground water blowing up through tiny cracks in the concrete basement floor.

the good part is that it was only ground water. my septic tank and piping is a good 20 feet below the grade of my basement floor so i didn't get any sewage involved.

the forecast for tomorrow involves more heavy rain so i don't plan on doing too much cleanup work until the weather is more cooperative.

Outside grade fall away from the house? All downspouts routed out and away? Need to get the water to go somewhere else and not into your basement. Sorry to hear of your flood.

While we haven't heard from Richard, for what it's worth here in central Ohio we had a sunny, completely dry day today.

I hope that gave him the break he needed to get things dried out and cleaned up.

It sounds like you don't have any drain tile at the base of your foundation. :shake Unless you want to spend the bucks to retrofit a system, I'd recontour your lawn as much as possible away from the house and put extensions on your downspouts to get the water as far away from the foundation as possible. Without drain tile, your basement is basically sitting in a swimming pool.... :O

Having a good submersible pump on the shelf will give you some peace of mind and insurance against any more biblical events. :D
