I picked up a 1997 3/5 from somebody here on the forum the other day, and I got it for a price that was fair enough to cover any problems that it might have. It was known to be not running, and overheating problems, so the seller was up front about everything. Here it is when I brought it home ![]() Here it is parked with all the white ones. It got to be a few too many Metros, so I sold the 2000 3/5 in this pic that has the composite headlights. That one was the first Metro that I have ever sold in my life, and it was not easy to do, but I needed room. ![]() The first thing I wanted to do on this rig was to verify the timing belt marks, just in case the previous owner did not put the belt on right. He had done the head gasket on it and it never did run, so I crossed my fingers for a simple fix. I pulled the timing cover and put my 17mm wrench on the crank, and started turning to bring the timing marks where they need to be. Unfortunately, the motor only turned a little bit before it started binding, and I could not get it to turn all the way to TDC. I pulled the head off, and it turns, but the crank does not. The #1 hole was full of rusty water, so I need to rummage through my motors and find something to put into this car besides the one I just pulled out. Here is the bottom of the head: ![]() and here is the block, just shy of making it to TDC ![]() I have a mystery engine in my engine pile that came with my 94 when I bought it. The guy said it came out of a running vert, and that I might need it to make my 94 run, but the 94 turned out to be a really nice engine. I don't have any idea how many miles it has on it, but I have enough OBD2 oil pumps laying around to find a good one for this old engine. It has the old round teeth style timing belt and an old style valve cover, but I might play with it and see if I can make it work. Here is the old vert motor ![]() If that does not work, I still have more stuff to choose from in the gas engine graveyard. I usually just rob stuff from the graveyard for other Metros, but I might be able to scratch up enough goodies to get something going for this new project...

This rig came with an aftermarket cruise control. I have never used an aftermarket cruise control, so I don't know much about them. Does anybody recognize this unit or know if it is worth keeping?![]() It was not exactly installed to my standards, but I suppose if it is worth while, I could come up with a nicer looking mount and wiring. It is kinda butchered into the factory wiring, so I will need to get rid of it or re install it all pretty like..

Do you know if those work all right, or is better suited for the trash can? I don't know yet if I will have to bring you this transmission. The down side of buying a car with a broken engine is that I have not been able to drive it around to see how the synchros are or if it has any problems. I guess I will just have to put an engine in to find out, and keep my fingers crossed.

You know your Metro addiction is in advanced stages when... You find yourself saying... Not "I needed the money..." but "I needed the room." Rummage through my motors. Or, you can take a picture with a minimum four running Metros of the same color, or take one that includes a running example from every year they were made. to you MetroMan!Yep, that would suck, having to rummage through your transaxles...

Yea, selling the 2000 3/5 kinda hurt. It finally had all the bugs worked out of it, and the engine ran as good as a Metro can run. A buddy of mine has been learning bits and pieces about Metros over the years of knowing me, and finally pulled the trigger on his first Metro. Just a few years ago he was talking about how dumb Metros were, but I recently gave him a loaner Metro for awhile when his truck was broke down. After a couple weeks of the $20 fill ups, it all made sense. He brought back my green 97 shop beater, paid up for the white 2000, and off he went. |

I was a Snap On dealer for awhile, and learned that although I risked getting one of my tools back used and abused, I could get lots of sales by putting the tools into a mechanics hands for a week with no risk to him. Sometimes you have to try something out to be able to appreciate it.. |

I was not thrilled with any of the extra engines that I had laying around, so I brought one into my local machine shop to have it done right. Here is what I am going to put into this rig. New pistons and rings, lotsa love to the connecting rods, new bearings, bored 20 over, the works. I know there is debate about down and dirty rebuilds vs snooty ones, but my personal preference is the snooty one, so here we go. It is not blue printed and balanced, but my guy made a few choices to bring it up a notch.

I just went back to see how long it has taken to get my guy to build me this engine, and that seems to be the downside of asking for something above and beyond. I just picked this engine up today, but I dropped it off about three months ago. I guess I will find out if the wait is worth it... |

I have the engine all built now, but I am having a hard time with the idea of putting this beautiful engine into such a crappy car. I have the engine on a stand, and when I get to my shop every morning, I stop in front of this engine and stare at it. It is ready to go into the car, but then it will get dirty and used.... |
