With all of the talk of the Pakistan Cultus and Geo like cars around the world going around, I began to wonder what it would take to actually deregulate a '97 model. What would have to come off or change to make this a basic setup in other countries? Egr removed? Less vacuum lines? Reprogram the computer? Your thoughts? |

No takers huh? Just to ease some minds though, this is all theory discussion. I was just curious to what the government forced onto these cars before they were available here. |

less smog equipment, maybe no airbags. KM odo as opposed to Miles. more stuff I am sure. normally I would say smaller engine but at 993 how much smaller can a newer car get? |

As far as emissions goes there's no difference. OBD2 started in '96 but that's just a difference in reporting, the car's computer must keep track of certain parameters and synch up with the government's/repairman's computer for diagnostic purposes and compliance monitoring. The reason for the change in bodystyle in '95 was crash safety which was mandated by the NHTSA. Crumple zones in the front end, steel beams in the doors and the doors had to interlock with the door sill, and the passive belt workaround was eliminated so air bags had to be added. That's the reason North America got the GEN3 cars and the rest of the world went on with the previous version. |
