Yeah, and that only lists ONE type of applicant. There are many others, among them; student, political, medical and the list goes on and on....... |

Based on what is listed on Wikipedia, which is clearly not comprehensive, nor necessarily accurate, the US appears to have the most generous immigration laws. The UK is at least somewhat similar. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigration_law |

back to the flag thing: Not my writing but concurs with my thoughts. I've been thinking about this debate a lot in the past couple of days. I'm not southern and have never been into waving the "stars and bars"...And while I don't think any municipal/state/federal government should specifically honor the Confederacy, it also shouldn't be forgotten. And I thought about other flags you frequently see flying within the U.S. and I thought about a family lineage. ------------------------------------- I had a great great great great grandfather who fought for the United States in the Revolutionary War of Independence. He was a loyal American patriot. But the British were his enemy. They wanted to kill him. It is said that the sight of the British flag invoked feelings of hatred when he saw it. Yet to this day, U.S. citizens of British descent are allowed to fly the British flag of their heritage within the U.S. without consequence. I had a great great great grandfather who fought for the United States in the Mexican-American War. He was a loyal American patriot. But the Mexicans were his enemy. They wanted to kill him. It is said that the sight of the Mexican flag invoked feelings of hatred when he saw it. Yet to this day, U.S. citizens of Mexican descent are allowed to fly the Mexican flag of their heritage within the U.S. without consequence. I had a great grandfather who fought against in the Spanish in the Spanish-American War. He was a loyal American patriot. But the Spanish were his enemy. They wanted to kill him. It is said that the sight of the Spanish flag invoked feelings of hatred when he saw it. Yet to this day, U.S. citizens of Spanish descent are allowed to fly the Spanish flag of their heritage within the U.S. without consequence. I had a grandfather who fought in WWI against Germany. He was a loyal American patriot. But the Germans were his enemy. They wanted to kill him. It is said that the sight of the German flag invoked feelings of hatred when he saw it. Yet to this day, U.S. citizens of German descent are allowed to fly the German flag of their heritage within the U.S. without consequence. My father fought in WWII against Japan. He was a loyal American patriot. But the Japanese were his enemy. They wanted to kill him. I know for a fact that the sight of the Japanese flag invoked feelings of hatred when he saw it. Yet to this day, U.S. citizens of Japanese descent are allowed to fly the Japanese flag of their heritage within the U.S. without consequence. The generation missing from the above list of ancestors is that of my great great grandfather. He happened to be a southerner and fought for the Confederate States in the American Civil War against the northern United States. He was loyal and patriotic to the Confederacy. He was an American nonetheless. But the Yankees were his enemy. They wanted to kill him. It is said that the sight of the American flag invoked feelings of hatred when he saw it. Yet as loyal and dedicated as he was to his southern homeland, unlike descendants of other nationalities whose ancestral homeland the U.S. has gone to war against, his descendants are now persecuted for displaying a Confederate flag in his honor. This isn’t actually my family lineage. But it could be the lineage of many Americans. Personally I don’t have any ancestral connection to the south or the Confederacy (that I know of). I’m not passionate about its history and its flags as those with southern heritage are. Yet I respect their connection to their ancestry as long as it isn’t to specifically invoke hatred or inequality. But my point is, almost any flag could be used by anyone to conjure up hatred. If the descendants of former enemies of the U.S. are allowed to fly the flag of their ancestry, why can’t a U.S. citizen with southern Confederate ancestry be able to fly a flag in honor of their ancestry? These are three things 'trending' on Facebook right now. #1: Jared (from Subway) molesting kids, the title reads: Jared Fogle: FBI Reportedly Raids Home of Subway Spokesman in Child Pornography Investigation However, once you click the link and read (which very few people do...) you see this "Subway spokesman Jared Fogle's home in suburban Indianapolis was searched by police and federal agents on Tuesday as part of a child pornography investigation involving the former head of his nonprofit foundation." This doesn't mean he isn't in on it or something...but it is nowhere near as leading as the fucking click bait title. #2: Paula Deen's son darkens his skin for a photo, the title: Paula Deen: Celebrity Chef Criticized for Photo That Appears to Show Son in Costume With Darkened Skin Again, clicking the link will get you this, "the image from a Halloween episode of "Paula's Best Dishes" that aired in 2011." Her son is dressed as Ricky Ricardo... #3: Girl 'body shamed' in Old Navy: Plus-size woman stands up to body shaming in Old Navy A trend here... click it and you will see, "Today I was shopping in Old Navy, standing in between a teenage girl and her mom," Taylor wrote. "The girl picked up a plus-size tank top, showed it to her mom and said, 'Look! Me and So-and-so can fit in this tank top!' Her mom laughed and said, 'Yeah, you could! That thing is huge!'" The woman then goes on to say she cried in her car because of the ordeal. This is just a case of an overly sensitive fatty..and the media being obsessed with people getting offended. |

Now I haven't been reading a lot of stories about the Confederate flag fiasco so I may have missed it, but I don't seem to remember hearing that people flying it at their homes having protesters outside calling for them to give up the flag or be dragged through the streets. I thought the real point was to get it removed from state buildings and the like. I'm sure that there are plenty of people that want it to go away completely, but just like all those other flags mentioned, those that are proud of their heritage will continue to fly it. I doubt that JM is nervous about someone seeing the flag in his garage and freaking out or calling the sheriff. I'm also sure that white supremacists will continue to fly it along with the Nazi flag as symbols of their ideal country. The hullabaloo surrounding this will pass when the next touchstone subject comes up and the only real effect is the flag will be removed from government locations and iconography, excluding war memorials. |

This is also a part of it people don't understand. I have some neighbors that keep knocking on my door asking for rides. Give a man a fish? (or something like that) anyway, I have been tempted to hang a confederate flag instead of an American flag... pretty sure those same people wouldn't want a ride anymore.

The issue started as removing the flag from government buildings, which should have been done a number of years ago (in my opinion). The problem that has risen is that many stores are no longer selling the flag and it just seems like a cop out. Old man's story particularly struck home for me. I've seen people paint their hood's with the 'rising sun' which is pretty similar to Japan's flag. I haven't heard any issues about it though. If memory serves, Pearl Harbor was bombed after the war involving the Confederacy, right? |

Yeah, the Confederate flag deal is nuts in that an innocent show has been taken off the air, the General Lee is getting repainted, and all kinds of stores are pulling items of historical nature because they contain the flag. There were some educational games on the Apple Store about Civil War battles that got removed because the flag showed up in them. These games were not promoting the flag, just showing it in a historical context. This is nuts and Apple used to have that "1984" commercial about how they weren't going to be Big Brother. I have relatives who fought on both sides of the Civil War. It happened 150 years ago. We fought Japan and Germany a lot more recent than that and they are some of our biggest trading partners and allies now. The PC police need to get over the flag. Conor |

Here is the article about the roof of the General Lee being repainted. http://www.nationalreview.com/article/420806/dukes-of-hazzard-general-lee-bubba-watson-erasing-flag-american-history I don't care how you feel about the flag, this car is a cultural icon. I am into guns too, new and old. I have had various war rifles from Japan and Germany. The Japanese was an Arisaka rifle with the Chrysanthemum emblem on it. Most of these were obliterated during importation. This was partly out of respect for the Japanese Emperor from what I understand but it was also to remove a Japanese war emblem. The same is true for many of the German Mauser rifles. They all had an eagle clutching a swastika which was removed on the ones officially imported. Guess what? The ones with the once banned emblems that happened to slip through unmolested are worth more because of the historical value. They all shoot the same but most people want the ones that were left as they were made. A collector offered my a MINT Mosin Nagant rifle in trade for my non-shootable Arisaka so I traded straight across. The Mosin has the nice hammer and sickle on it to. No, I don't like communism but I like the fact the symbols are intact. Conor |

You are so right MMM. What will be the next touchstone? Everybody seems to get upset over the least provocation, especially if they are in a minority. What sacred cow has yet to be touched? Gay marriage is two weeks old and seems like old news. The rebel flag is one week old and seems like old news. What will happen this week to keep the pot stirred in this country? How about everybody in this country legally and illegally READ THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and see what it actually says? Then, and only then, if they have any concept of discernment, will they understand what this country is really about. I'm tired of getting my news from short clips on the national news. They slant the stories and do not give all the relevant information because they intentionally obfuscate what is true. They have an agenda and they will promote it whenever and however they can. When Americans realize they have the power to change things.......only then will things change. Until that time regular Joe's will stay sheeple. rant over. |

True! Some other stupid topic will come up soon enough. I wonder what it will be. Jared from Subway? Bill Cosby? I have to say I thought Bill Cosby wasn't going to amount to much as I figured it was just someone wanting money at first, then more and more and more and more came out and I changed my position on that. AS mentioned, Jared hasn't been charged with any crime but Subway dropped him like a hot potato. Conor |
