The real discussion under all of this is that it is time to remove the Confederate reference from current state symbols. Changing street, school, and other location names is up to those municipalities/governing boards that oversee those locations and should be done in consultation with their constituents and is something that happens in the normal course of events (Martin Luther King Jr Blvd anyone?). Businesses, just like people are free to choose to carry a product for sale if they want. If the company believes that a product is somehow offensive it is their right not to offer it for sale. If they believe that the backlash from people who find it offensive will hurt their sales of other items it is also up to them whether they want to make a stand or cowe to the pressure. When these kinds of things come up it is a reasonable question to ask where you draw the line. It is not usually reasonable to jump to the conclusion that the worst case scenario is what people want or what will happen. Are there people who would like every symbol and record of the Confederacy erased? The answer is that there are probably as many as there are people who would like for the Confederates to have won and slavery still be legal in the entirety of the UCS. Neither option is even slightly likely and reacting like we have to guard against it just makes you seem old or closed minded or bigoted or some other negative connotation that like most appearances, isn't entirely accurate. The Confederate flag (any of them) isn't going anywhere. It will still be flown off the back of jacked up pickup trucks a d on the walls of redneck garages and everywhere else that it carries some meaning for the person who owns it and flies it. The government will be unable to outlaw it due to free speech protections and any attempt to change them to allow the banning of a simple piece of fabric with a pattern and colors on it will raise the ire of enough of the American population to immediately change their minds. My father and I had an interesting discussion on father's day. He was telling me about his Facebook post where he said that he was willing to give the South Carolina flag in exchange for everyone to pull up their pants and abandon all those parts of black culture that he finds offensive (paraphrased). I pointed out that this is nothing new, and the uproar around Elvis was the same since he was emulating black dancing and singing. He laughed and countered that he had always held that against him, but it wasn't like that in the 50s. When I pointed out that Doo Wop and Bee Bop originated with blacks at that time as well as the roots of Rock and Roll and that the older generation of that time said it would ruin our society he decided that if I was going to argue with facts, he didn't want to play. What does it all mean? These are the same arguments and concerns we have had for generations. Depending on how you choose to look at it you can make a reasonable case that our society has improved, not changed one whit, or is headed for the toilet. Feel free to resume politely arguing about the extremes now. |

I don't think the flag had any business being flown at a government building. The American Flag should be flown at all government buildings and that is where I stand on that. I'm excited for this weekend, it is my favorite holiday, it is Independence day. Post my service in the Army, Independence day has eclipsed Halloween as my favorite holiday. Anyone else got plans for the July 4th weekend? |

You may be a minority soon... http://www.breitbart.com/california/2015/03/13/leftist-uc-irvine-professors-students-rally-behind-american-flag-ban/ My question is, "Where does this kind of ridiculous, self-flagellative bullshit END?" There is no way we are going to be able to sanctify America's history by getting rid of this object or that...but some, for political gain, seem hell bent on trying. |

Yes, the American flag seems to be next on many of these groups' agenda. That is why I think it is so bad that they have successfully targeted the Confederate flag. They used a crisis to do what they have wanted to do for decades. By the way, you can go to Wal Mart and have them make a cake with the ISIS flag on it but not one with the Confederate flag. This happened in Louisiana of all places. Conor |

The media loves to fan the flames too! I just read an article about how several black churches have been burned in the south since this all started. Well, it turns out some were electrical problems and all but you wouldn't know that if you only read the headline. The ATF has only determined 3 to be arson related while others are undetermined or some type of obvious failure. As with Ferguson and other stories, I blame them for fanning the flames. Conor |

I will take this as a green light. If my comments are too much, let me know and I can censor myself as demonstrated earlier. The attack by the left on the rebel flag is only a small part of the war on the Constitution and Christianity. The banning of the rebel flag is not about racism, and if racism has anything to do with it at all, the racism is directed towards people like me who are not racist but are constantly being portrayed as racists. The hypocrisy in banning the rebel flag from not just government buildings, but all of society, is apparent when you can't buy a rebel flag on Ebay or Amazon, but yet you can buy desecrated USA flags, or any flag that represents lefty agenda. Here is a desecrated USA flag that I salute and respect. I never minded when the LGBT community had their cute rainbow flags of their own design, but this flag is MY flag that they have hijacked and desecrated. Here is a an Amazon link to where this flag is being sold, and where you can't buy a rebel flag. http://www.amazon.com/Flagline-Rainbow-USA-Polyester-Flag/dp/B001GZUOR2 ![]() The rebel flag is gone, and now the left is after bigger and better targets to destroy. As seen above, the left has desecrated MY flag while making the rebel flag unavailable, and now they are digging in deeper as seen in Cobrajets link: http://www.breitbart.com/california/2015/03/13/leftist-uc-irvine-professors-students-rally-behind-american-flag-ban/ Here is another link to what the left has in store for the American flag. I am shocked to be alone in my outrage about what is happening to my flag that I fought and served for. The problem here is that the new generations have no idea how bad an attack on the American flag even is. They are unable to see that the banning of the rebel flag is only a stepping stone to a much bigger attack on the USA. When I stand up for my country's flag, they see me as some kind of radical right wing extremist, because the only media that they consume is media that comes from the very people who are waging war on my country and flag. Even on this thread, I have to watch what I say so it does not get shut down when I am fighting for the USA flag. That in itself is obsurd... The left's plan to burn the American Flag: http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2015/06/30/activists-plan-to-burn-american-flags-in-new-york-city-ahead-of-fourth-of-july/ . |

The rebel flag is going NO WHERE. See here; http://www.ultimateflags.com/Rebel-flag-for-sale-Confederate-Battle-flag-for-sale.html In fact, smaller businesses are making more than they have on these in years because the big businesses can't afford to risk the negative feedback of selling something that has become polarizing. The flag hasn't been banned. And that other flag? That isn't the flag you are fighting for. It isn't a US flag. It is based on the US flag, but it isn't the US flag. There are no laws or restrictions on making a flag that kinda looks like another flag or incorporates parts of another flag. Perhaps the people that buy that flag are proud to be an American and want a personal way to show it. I am proud to live in a country where I can buy and fly the flag from any country and any design I want in front of my home and not have government agents come and take me away. As far as burning the flag, I understand it being upsetting for what it represents, but it is also one of the freedoms we have in this country, and I would purport an important one. When they start restricting our methods of protest, then you should become worried about what is next. Maybe you should go buy a few of those flags that you find offensive and burn them to feel better. |

I am surprised at the civility of this conversation. None the less, I am standing by to provide the link to the, " Kittens, I like them", thread. I have never understood the whole sensitivity to burning the flag. It would be the same if someone printed up a bunch of pictures of my mom, and drew moustaches on them, or burned them. It seems more a humorous and pathetic way of trying to get at me. To me there is too much pride in the world. Proud to be gay, black, christian, white, liberal, and conservative. I can be proud about what I did, but I can't be proud to be white. Why? I had no say in the matter. When someone says, " I'm proud to be a Marine", what they are saying is that they tried and succeeded at something truly challenging. When someone says, " I am proud of my daughter", they are talking about their own involvement in helping that person become a successful adult. All this other stuff, proud to be an American, proud to be a rebel, proud of our servicemen- Look, you don't get to take pride in shit YOU actually didn't do. It is kind of a vicarious butt-hurtedness, a kind of trying to link your own ego with the achievements of other people, or trying to feel proud about something that occured totally by chance( i.e. born an American, born white, black, etc.). The world needs a lot less pride. |

I find it pretty bad when you can buy an ISIS flag as part of a cake decoration at Wal Mart but not a Confederate cake design. I agree that the Confederate flag is just one step along the agenda of the leftists and that they took the actions of a crazed nutcase as an excuse to further their agenda. The guy who did that is no different than Timothy McVeigh. He was another example of one of these nutcases. UPDATE: I just saw that Wal Mart apologized for the ISIS flag cake and promises not to make another one. They claim the employee didn't know what it was. I have to say there are some less than brilliant Wal Mart employees but was he living in a cave? Conor |

Retailers usually blow with the wind- that is no surprise. Individuals cannot be stopped from flying whatever they want to. When you say I surrender, that means you threw in the towel, and called it quits as far as your national ambition goes. That you got to fly your flag on a United States of America government building for so long is pretty sweet for you. The Rebel flag is a critical piece of OUR history, and for that reason it must be preserved. |

being more of a "lefty" I have no problem with people owning rebel flags. I do have a problem with them being flown on ANY government building, or any other flag for that matter, with the exception of a state flag and the american flag, that's it! kinda like literature if you don't like it don't read it. I have seen NO government buildings with any rainbow flags etc. is this not the main point of this thread? |

I think the point of this thread is more or less the same idea behind frivolous lawsuits. People are immediately offended and feel entitled to have their opinion regarded as law. I like having a difference of opinion. But I also like to be able to see the other side of the coin. If we all agreed, we'd never have a debate. That would just be a boring existence to me. But getting along and accepting a difference in opinion is more than possible despite disagreeing on issues. Edited by Freeman, Jun 30 2015, 02:04 PM.
