You're not crazy, some of them came with dark gray/almost black interiors.

It was a stock image I saw, with a dark blue, and a black looking interior. Just like his! Wish I could find some interior pictures of that car. They must not have made very many of them! |

I was parked on a roadside at a kart race, and heard a commotion. I didn't think much of it until the announcement across the PA system, then made my way over there. I found that a Dodge dually came through at nearly the speed of light, struck a pickup, and started doing cartwheels. The dually CLEARED the car parked immediately behind me, leaving broken glass and oil spots on the top of it. My car was hit on the left side so hard it drove it into the ditch, knocking the right front tire off the bead when it went into the ditch. The left side was against the center console. All told, FIVE vehicles left on rollbacks, at least four of which were totalled. The dually landed right side up, with the driver unscathed. There was alcohol involved. That was the first time I had wrecked a car without even being in the area. |

Thanks, I appreciate that. It's been underway since last August. I don't have a thread yet, but figured I'd write one up at some point. I'll try to get around to it this summer. Every single piece of interior plastic was meticulously removed, cleaned, scuffed, and painted (numerous very light coats) with black Krylon Fusion. I think others have had success with something else, but I can't recall it presently. It is a little bit tempermental...not too difficult to scratch, but it holds up reasonably...I do have to touch it up a little occasionally (I don't mind). However, a few items I covered with a black fabric (can't remember the name of the fabric at the moment)...the entire upper portion of the dash (I removed the dash completely and separated its sections), the three roof stowage covers, the E-brake handle, the fabric-portion of the door panels, and the flap covering the tunnel behind the seats. I treated (and periodically continue to treat) the fabric with 303 UV Protectant. I also wrapped the upper portion of the E-brake handle and the grab-handles on the doors with black hockey tape. It's held up very well. New black molded carpet, a lace-on leather steering wheel cover, and solid black Wet Okole custom seat covers round it out. Other than the dash symbols, gauges, controls, and such, the entire interior is black with one exception: the hood release handle. I decided to leave it alone for reference and also because it's obscure enough. The old paint was that OEM gawd-awful pink/purple some knucklehead decided was a good idea for a paint choice (sorry if you like it). For the new exterior paint, I brought it in to Maaco, had them do some body work (rocker panels were rusted through), then had it painted Toyota paint-code 8T5 (blue ribbon metallic) in a mid-grade urethane paint with a urethane sealer. Several coats of wax later, it has a deep luster to its shine. The only thing bad about the color is that it shows even the slightest dirt/dust pretty easily. Yes, what I put into this is more than the car is worth, but I loved the car to begin with and now it's exceptionally nice. Everyone who looks at it just stares (especially those who saw it before all this was done). My mother-in-law didn't know anything about it. When she saw it for the first time, she thought I'd bought another new car). I will confess, though. It wasn't a full restore. When you pop the hood it looks more it's age (but it's mechanically sound). |

Duplicolor interior paint is the other product. I used both on my interior and the Duplicolor has a pretty good match for the interior plastic. It all has held up reasonably, but it does chip and scratch easier than I would like. The professional level product is Sem. |

SEM is quite affordable, in my opinion. You can get a pint of it and spray it with a HVLP spray gun with amazing OEM style results. It bonds very well from everything I have seen. |

Some day I'll get myself a "Tear-down" type of convertible and repaint the body and redo the whole interior... One day. Hope you don't mind if I steal your color scheme. Then again, I prefer the term "Inspiration". Even though it wasn't a full restore, it does look awesome. I'll be waiting on that project forum and pictures... so get crackin'!

91 model year verts have charcoal colored plastic trim parts. keep the plastic greased up with son of a gun and they stay very nearly black without any paint or the attendant chipping. ![]() i used the door panels from a 91 swift gt which also used black interior panels and dash parts. with a little effort you can fit some of the hatchback interior plastic to a vert. i changed the fabric on the door panels to match the fabric on the 89 gt seats. the 91 door panels were from a us market gt and they have the bumped out cover for the door mounted seat belt retractor which i used to house 6 1/2" speakers to help the 4" dash mounted component speakers on mid bass. and my damage rant...... this evening we went to my 12 year old daughter's summer concert at the ohio state university. we paid $7 to park in a structure and when we came out 3 hours later some choad had stolen the gas cap from my wife's aveo.
