Geo Metro Trim Levels

Wondering about the trim levels in Metros, specifically pre '95 models. I know that they sold XFI, Base, and LSI. I was wondering more about options that came new from the factory or dealer. I know that my XFI has no intermittent wiper speed, no rear wiper, no rear defroster, no vanity mirrors, no cruise control, no cassette or hatch speakers, etc. I know that no XFI's had A/C or automatic transmissions. Were all XFI's sold without any options, or could options like rear defroster be added on at a higher price? I wasn't sure if that's how they all came, or if the person that ordered my car new was really cheap. :lol Really wish I had intermittent wipers! (Is there a mod for that?)

If I am not mistaken, MSRP was $6,900 for XFI's and Base models. $9,999 for convertibles (maybe LSI too). I like to learn the background or history on these things. If anyone has a copy of a list of options from the factory or dealer, perhaps for when someone ordered one of these cars new, that would be awesome! Or point me in the direction of an existing thread on the subject. Thanks guys!

My 91 XFI has AC. Not sure if factory or dealer installed.

XFI had right mirror, cigarette lighter, rear window defroster, tachometer as optional. A/C was officially not available, but a lot of dealers put it on anyway. Intermittent wipers were not available, but can be added by changing the switch. I think you can use the Esteem switch and get five level intermittent.

I have most of the sales brochures, but they're 250 MB each, no convenient way to share them.

This should help. It's from a 1992 Dealer brochure.

I second that, thanks alot Rainman! I knew that someone had some kind of list like that. Why don't they sell cars like these anymore? I would gladly pay $10,000 for a new Metro that I knew would easily last over 20 years!

ZXTjato, a sedan is always four doors. I have always called 2 or 4 door cars with trunks "notchback", instead of hatchback, but I have heard the term "fastback" as well.

Big difference between a 4dr sedan and a 4dr hatchback, and its not hard to tell the difference.

No, the Esteem wiper mod is for 1995-2001 only.

So if I found a wiper switch from a pre '95 geo with an intermittent setting, I can just "mod" it into the column in place of the old switch, and it will work? Is there a thread for a pre '95 intermittent wiper mod? One intermittent setting would be enough; much better than constantly switching the "lo" setting on and off.

Yes, I put the intermittent wiper stalk from another pre-95 in my Xfi. Works great, plugs right up.

Funny that wasn't an option from the factory! (According to your pages above). I can understand that the XFI was the cheaper, more efficient option, but intermittent wipers would have been nice. If the first owner ordered a rear defroster, I would have enjoyed that too. :) I assume that would be a pretty advanced mod, huh? Probably not worth running the wires for it. Unless the factory already has wires run...?

Go to the junkyard and find the switch from a 1992-1994 with intermittent. You just get the entire combination switch, and swap the whole thing out. Boom! Intermittent wipers.

Defrost wires SHOULD be there already. As far as I know, that's a plug-and-play mod. It was in MY car (but my car is a 96).
You need the hatch, and the wiring harness (follow it all the way to the connector, and unplug it.) and also the button up front that plugs into your dash.

The Reason The Geo Metro X-Fi Was Unavailable With Air Conditioning And Automatic Is That It Was Purpose Built For That 53-58 MPG. The Automatic And The A/C Options Are MPG Robbers And It Wouldn't Be Able To Achieve Those Numbers With Those 2 Options. If You Choose To Add Air Conditioning To Your X-Fi You Forfeit Your 53/58 MPG.

I Personally Don't See The Logic Of Not Having Intermittent Wipers Or Right Side Mirror. How Can Running Your Wipers On The Intermittent Setting Prevent You From Getting 58 MPG? I Don't Get That. And Having Both Outside Mirrors Is In My Personal Opinion A Safety Issue. I Hate The Idea Of Having To Turn My Head And Look Back To Make Lane Changes. I Don't Know. Maybe Just Me.

I Remember When I Had My 1968 427 Big Block Corvette, I Had To Turn My Head And Look Back To Make Right Hand Lane Changes. It Didn't Have A Right Hand Mirror. But Back In Those Days Most Cars Didn't Come With One.
