How about--He's made Law Enforcement all look like idiots for 3 weeks now so if I shoot him in the back then no one is going to worry about it.

Dayle, I also was surprised you could just shoot someone fleeing in the back. Some law enforcement big wig explained that in NY it is OK to shoot at a fleeing person if they have committed a felony or are suspected of committing a felony. I guess it makes sense. In all the movies if a prisoner tries to escape they shoot him.

A year or 2 ago in CA there was the case of the rogue cop who said he was going to hunt down other cops. And twice the cops opened up on innocent people because they thought it was the rogue cop. They shot a little old lady delivering newspapers at 5AM. No warning. Just shot her and at her daughter. The old lady settled for a million and a new truck. Buy you have to question how scared the cops were to just start shooting at some random car, As far as I know, no cops were charged. Imagine if you or I shot the newspaper delivery boy because we were afraid.

The law is very different once you are already a criminal.... The presumption of "Innocence" no longer applies because you have already been judged guilty....

Also - once you are a prisoner - the kid gloves come off... There is no presumption in the law that you have to gently treat prisoners when they are escaping....

I'm just think about " fair play". Heck, I know he is a scumbag, but shouldn't he at least been given an order to surrender instead of simply putting two in him?

Dayle do you ever read any of the articles or links referred to? Just teasing. A little. ;)

After ignoring Cook’s orders, Sweat, 35, made a run for it through a field and almost reached a tree line, D’Amico said. That’s when Cook, a 21-year veteran of the force, opened fire with his handgun, hitting the unarmed Sweat in the torso twice.

.....because if he had made it to the treeline it might have ended up with another 3 weeks of making the 1800 officers looking like idiots.

I believe that was probably a big part of the decision to shoot. Hard to separate the emotions of how the cops felt at that point and keeping them from influencing their decisions.

I was just asking Dayle if he read any of the articles, becasue by all accounts they DID give him orders to surrender. And even if the guy didn't, I doubt we would EVER read that version.

We had one of those "America's Most Wanted" media scale manhunts a few years back for a local guy who was accused of killing a police officer who was chasing him on foot after an armed robbery. They searched for weeks and weeks, all the while the guy was moving around the county through the woods with a little help from his friends and his mom. Allegedly. . Never more than a handful of miles from town, and they couldn't find him.

One day some guys out searching an area where he was believed to be, and they spotted him heading into the woods. They phoned it in, and the Sheriff gave them an order not to pursue him, becasue he wanted to be there when it happened so he could be on tv. It took them another several weeks to catch him, and that only happened becasue a guy was walking along the edge of a wooded area VERY close to town again, and saw someones feet sticking out of a little shack. He got caught becasue someone found him sleeping.

Oh yeah, and all this was AFTER he escaped from the local jail in the middle of the day smack dab in the middle of town by making a rope ladder out of sheets and climbing over the 20' high barbed wire fence in the exercise yard.

Sheriff didn't get re-elected.
