I'm back!!; been distracted recently by life ...

After being gone a couple of weeks or so, I am back with GMF. An army LTC friend of mine often talked about the old Chinese curse that says "may you live in interesting times!" By that measure, I sure must be living an interesting life!!

Let's see now - since last we met I have:

- helped my beautiful old German Shepherd through the terminal stages of canine lymphoma. Last Friday I walked her down to the vet and said goodbye :( :(
- been rebuilding our front porch (new deck, stairs and railing)
- helped my dear wife through an extremely painful round of oral surgery. She doesn't drive any more, so that has included taxi service to myriad doctor appointments in the town 30 miles down the road. This also includes doing all the shopping and cooking for both me and her specific pre- and post-op needs.
- started a simple project to replace the embarrassingly squeaky front suspension bushings on the Magnum (AWD). Define "simple!" :O :O The Dodge is now sitting on jackstands under a tent/shelter behind the garage. The old axles, control arms, sway bar links, ball joints, etc are lying on the deck of the trailer next to it while I await new parts from a variety of sources. And I have to have it ready to leave on a 3,000-mile vacation next weekend!
- been doing extensive landscaping in the front and back yards, including digging up and washing the gravel in the planting areas all around the house. I want to reuse it, but when I did a half-ass job of this a few years back, the dirt left on the gravel became a fertile medium for the growth of a wide variety of weeds. I'm getting pretty good with that spray nozzle on the big jugs of RoundUp!
- interviewing contractors and companies to both install central air and replace all the windows in this big 100-year-old house of ours (Happy Birthday, house!! :congrats ) The ductless AC system is in, and the windows are due in a few weeks.
- combining 2 12ga. Mossberg 500 pumps (a '74 and an '09 model) into one intimidating looking hall sweeper - just in case! And one slightly less imposing hall sweeper. It doesn't look quite as bad-ass, but I don't plan to treat any bad guys to a side view!

Other than that, I'm just living the relaxed life of a college professor with no classes to teach through the summer! (Everyone seems to envy us the time off, but they don't realize that we only get paid for the 9 months we're actually on campus teaching classes! So while it's true that in the summer we get 3 months off, that's 3 months off without pay! :O :O )

With the Magnum up on jacks with no front suspension (those calipers sure look lonely hanging there on their wires under the fenders!), my little Metro is coming in real handy! My wife hates it, and she was grumbling all the way to the surgical clinic about its noise and ride quality. She didn't complain on the way home, but she was drugged up to the gills. She may not even have noticed, but in any event she wasn't able to talk with a mouthful of gauze applying pressure on her gums to stop the bleeding!

I upgraded the Garmin in the Dodge, so the Metro now has the beautiful big hand-me-down GPS from that car in it! And this one has free map updates for life! (The old one was missing a lot of roads that have been built around here in the last 8 years since it was new, and the cost of an update would have been the same as the cost of the new unit!)

So apart from these few things, I've just been bumming around the house.

Damn nice to have you back Dr. E. :cheers

Sorry about your dog, and hope the wife feels better soon.

If her complaining about the Metro is going to be a regular thing, at least one of you should do the pain killer thing before you make the trip to the Dr's.

working with contractors, taking care of sick people, keeping up a house, keeping a kitchen going. WOW, don't envy you-hope things turn out OK.

On the other hand you have the mechanical work to fall back on and to take your mind off of all the other stuff.

Just as a side note. I reduced my use of Rodeo and the time it takes for weeding by using this product.
Put it down 16 years ago and covered it with red lava rock for decoration after planting shrubs. takes a few minutes a week to blow all the leaves off and a few minutes a year to pull weeds from a large area. Well worth the time and money to install.

BTW, welcome back, you have been missed.

Yea, life happens. Seems to me your the kind of guy who grabs the bull by the horns and takes it for a ride. Glad the bull didn't throw you off. Hope everything works out well for the Missus and she begins to feel better soon.

Ductless AC? Is that the forced air type of deal?

I'll be honest, I don't like taking animals to the vet. It makes me uncomfortable. I wish I could do it myself. He was MY best friend for 15 years, I don't want him to have to go through that with someone else.

As for your wife, I hope she recovers quickly! Being in pain isn't fun for either party.

The rest sounds like fun, well, aside from working on a Dodge hehe.

So that's how you get them to not complain about them! Drugs! :lol
Glad to have you back. :thumb

Good to see you again sir. Hope your going to be at GP 2015. I am making the trip again this year. Really sorry to hear about your dog. They are our family, and when we have to put them down its a hard blow. Heck I get tired just reading all the things you have been doing.

Welcome back!! Sometimes life gets in the way of the things we want to do. The "have to's" sometimes aren't fun. Hope things continue to improve.

Hope you don't plan on replacing original wooden windows! :'( I promise, it will never, ever pay off.

I would own every old house if I could :P

I have loved historic architecture before Geos :lol

It is my sworn duty to attempt to save old windows, and sometimes I just piss people off. That just comes with the duty. I would have to say it's worth it! :rofl
