Looking to see what others pay for insurance to see if I should shop around.

Person:
Age: 19
Sex: Male
Location: Huntsville, AL
History: No previous tickets/collisions

Car:
Year: 1993
Make: Geo
Model: Metro
Trim: XFi

Insurance:
Plan Details: Only car on plan. Only driver on plan.
Coverage: Liability and uninsured motorist
Deductible: $1000
Miles per year: 8,000
Cost per year: $800

I'm trying to figure out how to lower this number. Especially because my car is driven 10-20 miles a week for the 8 months of the year that I'm at college. My deductible is also worth as much as the car is so I don't expect to get much if I crash.

Looking forward to what you people have to say.

Self-Declared "Genious"

I'm 20, and my insurance is insane. Of course, I've been in 3 reported accidents (2 not at fault), and I've had a couple tickets. On my own, with a full coverage insurance on my HHR (making payments), and liability only on my '94 XFI Metro, I would pay about $300 a month! I think it's just crazy. Most places wouldn't even give me a quote. Luckily I still live at home, and on my mom's insurance, I pay her about $200 a month. Hopefully it will go down within the next year or so.

Edit- $500 deductible on the Chevy HHR. We go through Allstate.

Out of curiosity, what do you pay for insurance currently?

having a passive auto alarm/low jack usually gets a discount for insurance. you just need to let them know you have it. also parking in a garage should help. it sucks but your age does not help at all. for males, 24 is the golden age when insurance usually drops.

I have 1 19 year old male full time student 1992 swift no frills basic coverage 1000 deductible with driver training. 400.00 a year. I have a 1 18 year old female 1989 swift same basic coverage 1000 deductible with driver training 389.00 a year. 1 male 48 years old 1992 swift basic coverage 350.00 a year no tickets! I sure would have thought that my insurance would have been a lot cheaper than my kids!

Only insurance on my Metro is State required Liability.
age 75, no tickets no accidents on my record. 8000 miles per year. 4 months per year storage. multiple vehicle discount. multi insurance (house) discount. AARP driving school discount.

Still $700 per year. Just plain bullshit.

Sure, shop around. Let the buyer beware. That being said, insurance is incredibly expensive for young males, even under ideal circumstances. If possible, get a quote from an independent insurance agent that deals with multiple providers.

I have 2 cars with full coverage and my metro, I only pay about $120 a month, but then again I'm 34 and have a clean driving record.

I am 23/female and I pay $284 for 6 months ($47.33/mo) for both Metros total. It used to be less. :( I have no accidents or tickets.

I only have liability, not full coverage, but I have pretty high limits.

get rid of under/no insured. you don't need it on a sub $1000 car. the only thing you need in that situation is MEDICAL and that you get no matter what.

less than 5000 miles a year will also lower that value.

$800 a year for being 19 years old is actually pretty damned good.

get rid of the under/no insured lower the miles below 5000 miles.

Many insurance companies will give you a student discount, especially if you keep your grades up. My wife handles the details, but it seems to me I'm paying about $600 a year for full coverage on the Magnum and the bus and same on the Geo (minus comprehensive.) I'm the only driver, no accidents or tickets, and the defensive driving course every couple of years. Of course, I'm old enough to be your grandfather, so that weighs into it too!

I have my spouse on my insurance and I pay $1214 per year ($101 per month) for:

2007 Honda Fit (Full coverage)
2000 Chevy Metro
1989 Honda Civic
1974 VW Beetle

No accidents. Three tickets; rolling two stop signs and a tail light 'fix it ticket'. I am with USAA for reference.

I was paying like $45-50 a month when I had just the Honda Civic and VW Beetle and I was single.
