I've been trolling Craigslist for the past few months, looking for the odd Metro that pops up once in a while. It's mostly garbage (trashed 3-speed sedans that "GET 45MPG" ), but one finally came up at the beginning of June. The owner actually cleaned it up before taking pictures. I don't think I've ever seen that before! 2000 GEO METRO ![]() It's been listed for a month. The price started at $2,500 and has been slowly sliding down. Now it's $1950. 3-cyl, 5-speed, tach cluster (!), and only 146,000 miles. Judging by the CAPS LOCK and the fact that he wants calls, not texts, I'm thinking the seller is... elderly. I'm not sure if I should go take a look at this or not. I've got my Metro, but it will never look that good without spending $$$$$$ on body and paint work. Every panel on mine is covered in dents, and it has 100,000 more miles. I'm not sure if I want a beater or something nice. It's fun to have a beater to throw around, but I do enjoy polishing and waxing a car until it shines, and my paint is too far gone for that. Oh yeah, this is mine, for reference: ![]() Assuming the silver car's mechanics look as good as the rest, what would you do? Stick to the beater or ditch it for the nicer one? |

Those front seats and door panels have me interested already. I would check it out. It is a bit higher than I would like to pay, but a Metro is a Metro. I dropped about double that for a Fit recently and I'm really enjoying the 'newer' car thing. AC and decent looking paint really does feel good. |

Very nice looking clean car and corroded battery terminals. Sure, why not have both? ![]() It realize it's a really close call and I know this is completely subjective, but I think that silver one is slightly cleaner and nicer looking than your red one. ![]() OUCH! Well, if you are going to go... there... Don't leave out the fact you don't think he is younger also because he used punctuation and spelled basic English words correctly. ![]() #whoneedsaneducationwhenyouhavefastthumbsandasmartphone #ilearnedeverythingiknowaboutproperspellinggrammerandpunctuationbytexting And, don't neglect the fact that he capitalized the first word in every single sentence... ![]() Edited by myredvert, Jul 1 2015, 03:29 PM.

I've replaced my dashboard and console with '00 plastic, and I cleaned the seats via the Stiffchezze method, so my interior looks almost as good as his. The outside is beyond hope, though. You got the fit for only $4K?? Nice!
Eh, corrosion's easy to clean. I notice it has a big dent in the driver-side fender, too, but overall, the body doesn't look like somebody went to town on it with a hammer. Intact paint is a wonder to behold at this price point. And look at those headlights! Just a light fog, not a cracked yellow mess.
I was hoping people would talk some sense into me, but nooo! Ranger has a friend already. Not a Geo, but red. ![]() I'm going to sell the Nissan, but not now. I'd hate to try and sell a car without A/C at this time of year. Three cars is a bit much for a guy who rides his bike to work.
He's a lucky guy. I know $2,000 is a lot for a Metro, but all the ones I see for sale around here are trash compared to this, assuming you can find a 3/5 hatch for sale at all. They all want $1,500 or more, too. $2k seems reasonable to me for an apparently garage-kept car with working A/C and under 150,000 miles.
Yeah, it's almost too close to call, but I think you're right. ![]()
Absolutely, his grammar and spelling were impeccable. I thought it was cute that he named his transmission, too. I see a lot of cars on Craigslist named Manuel. They should replace the shift knob with a little sombrero. Put a little moustache on the front.

It looks very nice. Go check it out, flash 15 $100 bills and see what he says. Even if you have to pay $1950, you could sell yours & recoup some money. Your Nissan looks killer. What year is it? |

I like the Nissan but I like the background even better. This is the Vermilion and Echo Cliffs, part of my research area. I know right where this picture was taken. It is a great spot and on the rise heading up to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. This is a neat area and you see condors soaring here on a regular basis. Conor |

Alright, fine, I'll give it a look. I don't know what I was expecting, asking on a Metro enthusiast forum. Of course the answer will be, "buy it!" I'm going to look at it tomorrow afternoon. I was a little worried when I went to call him, since his area code is from the Frozen North, but the car's actually from San Francisco. That explains why the paint isn't peeling, and rust isn't a worry there, either. Best of both worlds. He is an older guy, but "elderly" wasn't entirely accurate.
If the guts look as good as the rest, I won't haggle too much. If it's leaky, or the axles pop, or something, well... I don't think I'll get it. I'll just keep fixing up the car I know. Thanks, about the Nissan. It's a '93. I learned stick on that car. I drove it to Oregon and back in the winter, but I needed something with A/C for the summer. Why, you want it?
