You're exactly right! I was on 89A, a ways past Glen Canyon. It's a gorgeous area, even though I never turned south to see the Grand Canyon. I always take a different route every time I go up to Oregon. State roads all the way. There's so much to see between here and there, it would be a shame to waste it on the interstate. I didn't know you were familiar with the West. Cool! ![]() |

When you get to Jacob's Lake, turn left instead of right and it's a straight shot to the North Rim. For my money, the North Rim is prettier and a whole less commercialized than the South Rim. Long ago, a friend of mine and I drove around the barricades at Jacob's Lake one year before the road officially opened for the season. Old (not at that time!) VW Squareback. We drove through the last of the snows and got to the Rim just before sunset. It had been a cloudy, not-quite-stormy day, and as the sun dropped down below the clouds it lit up the spires with a beautiful golden glow .. and we had the whole Grand Canyon all to ourselves!! |

Yeah, I have spent a LOT of time in that area of the world and am very familiar with it. Nice picture of Marble Canyon by the way. Did you see condors hanging out by the bridge. I am not sure if the people attract them or they like the structure of the bridges for roosting and such, but that is one of their favorite locations. They are neat to see even though they are really a big vulture if you ask me. This area has worked out well for their reintroduction to the wild. I guess they will eat anything including trash along the road. I understand they have to remove stuff from them on a pretty regular basis. They are full of things like coins, shell casings, broken glass, random hardware, and the like. I guess anything shiny is an issue. Lead from bullets/shot is a big issue because of the high acid content of their stomachs. I talked to a biologist about this and he said that introducing them anywhere near oil and gas facilities is hopeless. Those areas are littered with lots of random discarded and broken hardware from the rigs and they eat it up fast. I can imagine if a worker drops something, they aren't going to go find it. They will just pull another one out of their bag and continue on. Conor |

It's nice, but expensive divorce proceedings would be in the works if I get anything else before getting rid of some. You know the old saying, "it's cheaper to keep her".

It's a long drive around to get to the top side, so I can see why it would be less popular. If I ever do go there, it would definitely be the North Rim. Problem is, as a national park, dogs are not allowed outside the parking lot. I just don't enjoy the world quite as much without her around. ![]() ![]() What a great memory of the sunset over the last snows. Sunrise or sunset is definitely the time to see this landscape. I wish I had been around when Squarebacks were new. They look awesome. I saw a number of them the the last two times I went to Barrett-Jackson. ![]()
I honestly don't remember any living things there, avian, human, or anything else. It was almost disturbingly quiet. I did find the signs confusing. I eventually realized they must be referring to bungee jumping, but at first I couldn't figure out why a legal citation was necessary on top of certain death. ![]() ![]() Maybe we can hook up next time you're in the area. I promise I'm not as crazy as all those people you seem to attract.

Funny you should mention divorce. That's the reason this guy's dumping the Metro for cash. Lawyers sure don't come cheap! ![]()

Sorry MMM, not today. I went to see it this afternoon. There was this expression I heard, maybe here? "Perfect from afar, but far from perfect." Yeah. The silver Metro really wasn't much better than Ranger on the outside. I guess the silver paint just makes scorched clearcoat less obvious. This new car would be more of a step sideways than a step up. The tires were nearly bald, headliner falling down, and the window trim was just as crumbly as mine. The bumpers, even more beat up. The engine didn't have a spec of oil leaking from it, and the clutch was new and snappy, but the transmission appeared to have a slight leak, just like mine. At least it shifted far smoother than mine, even though I have Synchromesh. I need a rebuild. And motor mounts! The difference was night and day. Way less wobble when I let of the throttle in low gears in the silver car.Anyways, all that can be fixed on Ranger, and at the end of it all, I'd still have a red car. Back to work, then.

I'm going to look at it tomorrow afternoon. I was a little worried when I went to call him, since his area code is from the Frozen North, but the car's actually from San Francisco. That explains why the paint isn't peeling, and rust isn't a worry there, either. Best of both worlds.
He is an older guy, but "elderly" wasn't entirely accurate.
