I know this isn't geo metro related which is why I'm posting in the lounge. Feel free to tell me if I'm in the wrong place, I just figured I would ask. I trust you guys more than most people. So my wife has a grand cherokee that has been overheating if it idles to long. I've replaced the water pump and thermostat the fan comes on like it is supposed to, all that is left is the radiator which doesn't leak. My mechanic tells me it is full of gunk probably and needs to be replaced so that it will cool properly. He wants $500 to do the job which seems high to me and I would rather not do that if I don't have to. Is there any way to clean out a radiator and have it work properly again? I've been reading about flushing radiators online and was wondering if I tried that if perhaps that would potentially help? I'm not sure if that will repair a radiator that is already clogged or just prevent one from getting to this point. Have any of you experienced this before on any cars and found a solution outside of replacing the radiator? Or is my mechanic just feeding me a line? Sorry for this being way off topic, but I appreciate any advice. Thanks! |

Run the car til the thermostat opens and the system gets good and hot. Feel the front of the radiator, top to bottom, left to right, section by section. Any part that feels cooler than the other is plugged up. Turn the heater on, fan on high, heat on high. If it is not operating at 100% heat then it is probably plugged up. Anyway.....you will probably have to do a system wide flush. Remove the thermostat. buy radiator flush kit. Do the 'extreme' as per the instructions on the kit. Still heating up? go to Rockauto.com, autozone, NAPA, and/or any other local parts store. get a radiator. install it yourself. EDIT: rockauto.com radiators for 2000 grand are priced from $80 to $160. NAPA flush kits are around $25. Heater core should be less than $50 Edited by Old Man, Jul 3 2015, 12:20 PM.
