Hatch doesn't automatically open - not sure if this is a problem...

On my '99 I have to use one hand to turn the key and my other hand to open the hatch. It acts like it pops open but it is still kind of locked until I pull up on it. Not sure if this is something that is fixable or just the way '99's act.

:dunno Mine is the same way, part of the issue may be partially worn-out hatch struts?

I turn the key and hear a click, but don't see the hatch move. Yet when I reach down to open it, it's perfectly willing to open wide. I don't think it's sagging struts. It's just the low-key way mine does things.

I'd think you could adjust the latch or the bump-stops to give it that little bit it needs to lift a hair so it lets go and stays that way.

If I unlock mine, it stays unlocked until I close is somewhat firmly. I'd have to lift it a few inches to manage this.

I just replaced my hatch struts, and it still does this. I think it's perfectly normal.

I have seen this too. The rubber stops get worn, so I adjust them longer again. Sometimes they are so old, they break, so I pick up some better ones at pick n pull.

My struts are new. When I turn the key I hear a click but it is not possible to open it at that time. I must continue to keep the key turned and open it with my other hand. Must be an adjustment I can make.

There are two round rubber bumpers on either side of the hatch that screw in and out for that adjustment.

Mine clicks, and then the latch stays out of engagement so I can lift the hatch. Takes very little effort to close and latch, too. As mt999999999999 ;) says, it must be normal.

Yep, that fixed it. Thanks!

I really had to back those bumpers way out to get it to work. Hmmm.....

Hey... does all this teasing go back to the windows? :P And I assure you there is a story behind the 9's. I got annoyed (back in primary school) of all the simple user names with my initials being taken. So I went with the 9's, and still refuse to give it up :lol

When I first replaced my hatch struts, it was incredibly difficult to close the hatch. I really had to slam it. It seemed to get easier with time and silicone spray. Then I realized that I had removed the latch (attached to the car), and perhaps put it on backwards. I switched it, and things were fine afterward. I can unlatch my hatch with the key, remove the key, and then easily pull it up.

Honestly, I am just so glad that I don't have to hold the hatch up over my head (or prop it up with a broom) anymore. The fact that it holds its self up is a blessing. :lol

Sir Metrologist

FYI
I don't have bump stops (dry rot) and mine does not do that. Turn the key, let it go, and lift.
IIRC the '98+ Metro's got a two stage latch, maybe step down to a single stage latch?

:gp

Starting in '98, it's a two stage latch, kinda like your hood. That's why you need to change the latch if you install an inside release cable.

You guys just don't have the automatic hatch lift. This is a very rare option , I have found only one over the last 10 years of searching. Good hunting. :D

My bump stops don't touch on my 93, and the hatch works right. You can adjust the latch a little lower so that the hatch seal has a little pressure on the hatch. Just make sure the corners of the hatch don't hit the car when you close it.
