Got some goodies in the mail today. I read that a Honda Civic STS is a near perfect match to the factory shifter. I went ahead and ordered a lever and knob off Ebay and received them today and couldn't wait to get them installed.

Here is everything fresh out of the wrapper. Green anodized Short throw shifter for 88-00 Civic and variants, and a Titanium anodized heavy Type-R Shift knob. Everything was decent finish, much worth the $17.38 I paid for them.

Had to do some filing of the lower bushing carrier to fit the end of the new lever in, but 15minutes with a metal file I had it enlarged enough to pop it through. Got everything installed and realized I dont have a 5/16" bolt to go through the linkage. I will grab one tomorrow at work and throw it in over my lunch. Civic shift levers DO fit, a little loose, but nothing a second snap ring below the top one cant fix.

never ever EVER have metal shift knob on a car in Arizona, buddy had one it was so hot in the summer it couldn't be touched with out a shirt wrapped over it. over 9000 degrees flaming shift knob for living on the wild side, if you wanted to shift you had to endure the blistering pain.

but you live in WY where there is no surface of the sun days

So Ive heard. I used to live in Columbus, GA and it was the same thing. I now live in NE Wyo and it doesnt get nearly as hot maybe 2-3 100-105* days a year. I may switch to a different knob down the road, but for now this one is what I liked.

Also, don't be particularly surprised if the shaft breaks just below the threads. Ends up being an even shorter throw shifter.

Relatively direct, i had to file out the lower metal plate some. I also have tiny amount of up and down play, but Im gonna throw another snap ring and regrease and that should get rid of 99% of the play.

Finished the install of the STS. Had to get a 5/16" bolt and washers from work. I got home tossed it in and beat the weather to the finish. Everything shifts into gear fine, has a positive feel, much less slop.

Sits a little lower. Not a big deal for me.

Didnt work today because I had a 730am Dr apt. 2 hour drive away. I got home about 12pm and I instantly got to work on the Metro.

Todays accomplishments were to get the car running after an overnight piston soak with MMO, Clean carpets thoroughly, and reinstall seats so I can take it into work and fix the rust holes.

Here is a Before and After of my carpet... pretty self explanatory, had no idea how long or what caused those stains. I used a product called Lifter-1 and it worked wonders.

I then got the seats back in, vacuumed them off really good and tried to clean some of the nasty gunk of the slide rails. You can also see the height of the Short throw Shifter I installed.

After I got it all closed up, I took it for a quick test drive down the highway and back. Alot of smoke from the residual MMO burn off, but halfway through the drive it cleared up and seems healthier than ever.

Spilled cup of coffee or hot chocolate...a whole one, probably.
pre-treat (the longer the better) followed by using an extractor would do wonders for it...but considering what you're working with, that came out decent.

Thanks Stubby. I may pick up another can and see if I cant get them out more. I do think they were coffee. Kinda looks like it to me. My guess is previous owner had cup sitting in the little holder behind the E-brake handle and hit a bump which cause said cup to flop over onto the floor

Starting my weekend project!

Something is missing...

Oh this is why! Cut a bunch of the rubber out and filled with polyurethane. Shift bushing tommorow.

lemme know how it is for vibration transfer from the engine. I'm curious enough to keep thinking about it, but don't care to make my ride worse!

Hey Stubs, I dont even notice heavy vibration. It has a little more NVH, but not enough to keep me from doing a second... probably gonna pull the other ones out and do them too.

Well... looks like my engine rebuild is gonna be sooner than expected. Not a huge issue, parked it along my house and ready to start the teardown
