I use "Royal Purple" or some knockoff of it. Because it's cheap. Home Depot sells a gallon of it in their Zep brand for like $7. Spray it on (full strength or 50/50 with water), let it soak for at least 15 minutes, then either add some elbow grease with a scrub brush then a hose (for caked on crap) or use a pressure washer. Of course, you will have to blow out your spark plug wires after, as water will have gotten in the holes, and you run the slight risk of other electrics getting water in them, but I've had no issues. Run your engine for 5 minutes then go for a drive to get rid of remaining water. Wear a dust mask or something if you're spraying that purple degreaser, it's pretty nasty. Others will recommend "Simple Green", which isn't as strong, but will probably do the job. There's also engine degreasers in spray cans or citrus degreasers. The latter is probably the weakest. Will work fine for non-caked on stuff. Before: ![]() After: ![]() I didn't have my pressure washer set up. That's just Purple Power and 5 minutes with a dish scrub brush. Oh, and I sprayed the engine with a light mist of silicone spray after to prevent oxidization and or dry hoses and whatnot. Edited by Stubby79, Jul 11 2015, 04:14 AM.

Thankfully with our little engines, most of the electrical connectors and sensors are on the back side of the engine....you can 90% avoid that area when cleaning. They ought to be able to handle a little splashing of water, though. The important thing, in my opinion, is to get it dry as fast as reasonably possible after. I wouldn't wash an engine and leave it sitting wet all weekend kind of thing. Compressed air is useful for blowing water out of spark plug holes/boots and off of connectors and such. |

Yeh I'll try to see if I can get some cleaner... as far as rinsing the back toward the firewall or over on the sides where the suspension is n cleaning off the master cylinder n stuff over there... is that stuff safe to hit with water? If I'm going to do this I might as well clean the whole engine bay lol |

Number 1 in my book is "Gunk" brand engine degreaser in a spray can. Get the original & not foaming type. Don't cheap out & get an off brand like wmart or whatever. They don't work 1/2 as good. Gunk works best when you warm the engine up some, spray on, let it soak a few minutes, then use a heavy duty scrub brush to knock loose the crusty stuff. Hose off, done. Number 2 would be Zep 505 from Home Depot. Gal jug & you need to put it in a spray bottle. For really bad stuff, lather, rinse, repeat. By the way, yours looks pretty clean compared to several I've seen. Edited by Car Nut, Jul 11 2015, 06:05 AM.

ditto on the gunk engine cleaner. ![]() i have used it for 40+ years and it works like magic. purple power and simple green can actually discolor aluminum and cause corrosion. another good cleaner is tide laundry detergent. i use that to wash engine parts when i rebuild them.

If your an environmentalist and are looking for a chemical free solution...... this gets into those nooks and crannies. Check with your local officials first as drought conditions exist in many parts of the country! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grZGoxxq42A&feature=player_detailpage |

I think that would be enough to remove the engine from the car by itself, or just knock the dang car over! |

I can agree with the Gunk stuff too..I've just owned a lot of vehicles, so it was cheaper to buy a gallon of something rather than paying $7 for a can every time! And as previously mentioned, you can avoid most of your electronics/sensors and still get 90% of your engine clean. |
