I have a 92 metro with a 94 engine. I am finishing a swap. When I looked up an alternator, it asks me if it was made in Japan (50 amp) or Canada (55 amp). The VIN says its Canada. I have no idea where the engine was made. Check my logic on ths, if the wiring is from the 92 then I should buy the 92 alternator...yes? The engine has nothing to do with the alternator...right?

Turbo3 and Twincam Tweaker

japanese or canadian manufacture, the wiring is the same on both variants.

i would suggest that you just use the 55 amp alternator as a standard replacement. the brackets are the same, the wiring is the same, the fusing is the same. the japanese distributor is just more expensive with no real benefit in using it.
