I think it is common knowledge that the hardware in platform gaming machines is ridiculously cheap compared to the same performance out of a PC. I saw the Airforce wire together a string of PS3s and made it into a super computer. The hardware is commonly sold at a loss now days.

Plus, the X360 and PS3 were desinged on the cheap in 2005. Video game producers make almost all their money in the console market, with PC's as a small afterthought, so video game technology has largely been stuck on decade-old hardware. I'm so glad we can finally move on.

And yes, the Witcher franchise is fantastic. In most games, if they give you a choice at all, it's "be a hero" or "be a jerk". In the Witcher, many times, there are no good options. You can try to be a hero, but it often just makes things worse. There is no black and white, just shades of grey. I haven't played the newest game (I'll wait for the inevitable sale on Steam), but I have played through the first two. The Witcher universe is based on books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. I've read two of his books, and they are excellent. :thumb

That is very true. The console market is huge. Steam on the PC is quite amazing though. I also assume they have wild profit margins. You don't even have to make a CD anymore, just download it straight from the internet.

I forget the specs on the PS3, but on release it was exponentially cheaper than a comparable PC.

EDIT:

PC gaming is becoming wildly more popular. I know several people who are PC only that use to buy all three major gaming systems. To me, there is really no other way than PC and a Nintendo. The Nintendo (whatever current system) is always different than Sony or Microsoft's product and offers a different experience. I'm a huge Zelda and Mario fan, so I kind of just need a Nintendo in my house. Other than that, most games can be found on the PC and the PC offers many free to play MMOs and online games that can't be found on consoles. Couple that with open source gaming and free steam software and it really is a no brainer, the PC is the best. I bought my dad a i5 laptop with 4 GB of ram a few years back and it was something like $400-500. It can play a pretty wide variety of games actually. Nothing crazy, but enough to get you into the world of PC gaming.

this is true i can agree on this opinion. To me when some one say they want a hard core bad to the bone gaming experience and they get some late gen console im like ehhh well ya know its not all that. when some one say they want a nintendo i think of a family gaming time, the wii for example has great games that are kid friendly and the peripherals are unique with that wii mote and nunchuck thing, the wii wont offer top end graphics or blazing online gaming but it will give a family games that are good enough to be up to date and easy to learn, i can teach my mom how to play a wii game because the motion is familiar, bowling, tennis, swing a sword etc. etc. i agree a pc and a nintendo can offer the entire gaming experience.

but on the crazy part of things a pc can use a wii mote via blu tooth, but its complex to set up yada yada and as scratchpaddy said i am also glad we can move on from decade old hard ware, i feel a change in the way games are coming around, we are getting more and more people into games there are schools for every thing games its a huge market and us gamers will want the best performance highest stuff we can get our hands on and the price is going down. for example my graphics card an evga 780 ftw is $500 when you can get a GTX 980 for only $630 how crazy is that, that is a ton A TON of graphics horse power for so cheap it baffles my mind how much bang for buck there is to be had on games some times.

I don't recall the graphics card I have, but it was only like $100 to step up from the 1GB to 2GB Nvidea card in my laptop. Basically, yes, it is cheap. I bought a $12 graphics card that supports 1080p resolution, HDMI, and has something like 256MB or 512MB. I run it in the living room PC so I can connect it to the TV via HDMI. The point is, it was less than $20 and literally boasts more memory on that graphics card than my Pentium 3 PC's hard disc. Twenty years changed a lot in technology! Not to mention that Pentium 3 was something like $3,000.

I'll totally agree that Nintendo is more family oriented and casual, which I like. We play a lot of mini-game games because you can get 4-8 people to have a good time without really having to learn anything. It also keeps competitive frustration down. I remembering doing LAN parties on the Xbox and a lot of my friends were sore losers.

oh man do i remember LAN parties in the garage or hoarding up in a living room, CRT clunkers stationed all atound Xbox halo goin on and more cheetoes than any one can eat, those were really fun days, i swear xbox revolutionized the gaming market with its multiplayer style of gaming. i went to a LAN party for starcraft and every one had to hook up to the network, it was lame because no one was gaming for laughs it was all way way serious comptetitive gaming where we were all connected to the internet any way, do what was the point? i could have stayed home and got the same results.

Ethernet LAN parties were awesome! We would set up in my friend's room and his brother's room and do 4v4 Halo on two TVs.

A long and somewhat filthy time ago I remember going to the store and purchasing my first "gaming console" it was a Nintendo 64. I bought the game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in unison with it and played that game for years (it was a fun ass game until Majora's Mask came out). Then in like 2001 or so I bought a ps2 and fell in love with GTA. San Andreas was my favorite game and I played it for quite some time until I replaced the ps2 with a ps3 in 2013 when GTA V came out. Had an Atari 2600 in my living room for the longest time as a kid but never knew what it was until recently...

I play video games like once every 3 days for an hour or so but it's fun, who doesn't like running over hookers? :evillol

I do remember taking turns on Vice City. We would switch off whenever we got 'wasted' haha. Those games are fun, but probably not in a healthy way. I played video games from about 4 pm until 11 pm yesterday. I took a couple breaks to make my daughter food, play with her and put her down. But I had a crazy good time. I caught up with 3 different groups of friends, none of which are remotely local to me. I attempt to get a good gaming sesh in with each of my groups of friends at least weekly so we can talk and such.

games are a great way to eacape for me. between moving, job, money and so on, i crave a massive adventure where i can go explore and get into something just dive in and disappear some games over the years have done that to me, secret of evermore, secret of mana, super metroid, Revolt 64, burn out revenge, metroid prime, MP echoes, pikmin , pikmin 2, zelda twilight princess, metroid prime 3, burn out paradise, starhawk, LBP, LBP 2, diablo 3 and now the witcher 3. these are the games that had the highest level of emersion for me, i got way into these games i listed. i cant usualy just jump in my car and go on massive adventure so games fill that need to explore something, my GF uses books for that, i use games.

I just installed Ultima 7 (circa 1992) on the compy for the first time in years... RPG gold if you've never played it. Massively ahead of its time and still tons of fun. I don't however miss dos haha. dosbox makes it easy to play though.

Games are really coming back around for me. For the past few years I really haven't played games. I've been more of an activity oriented person. I would work on my car, build things outside, etc. But now that I have a daughter and she needs supervision, I like to stay inside and around her. So playing a game on my laptop on the couch or in the rocker in her room really is convenient and passes the time while she plays by herself or watches a movie.
