You also don't know the joy of filling up 26 gallons at the pump! haha. SUVs are nice while you are riding in them and utilizing the features. My wife really wants a SUV, but I don't think she realizes that it gets half the MPG that our auto Metro does. |

I have pumped 42.5 gallons at one fill up into my Ford Excursion before, 44 gallon tank. It gets 14 MPG pure highway, 12-ish mixed and 8 to 9.25 when towing our 11k lb 41' travel trailer. Seats 8 (regularly!), can handle full 4' x 8' sheet goods inside and takes all day to clay and wax! It sleeps all Winter to keep it on a low salt diet as it is getting harder and harder to find these big wagons in good shape. It only sees use as a people mover when we have a large group and when we are traveling with the trailer, most of it's solo miles are running around the camping destinations. I can't imagine using it as a daily driver on a regular basis. It's a big change in perspective swapping between the Metro and EX, love them both for their very different abilities!

I wish my wife's SUV got half what my Metro does. The best we get with her Yukon is 17, no matter if it's on a trip or around town. That's an economy giant next to the Suburban we just sold a couple months ago. It was a 2500 4WD with a 7.4, and got 10. That being said, I kinda miss it. |

It seems like most cars are engineered to get around 300-400 miles per tank, regardless of fuel economy. We were at the used car store looking at a Mazda CX-whatever SUV. The lady was going on and on about the great fuel economy because it wasn't a big engine. Well, the 2.2 (or 2.3L) turbo got like 17 MPG city. I can't believe she had the chops to call that 'good!' She said it was probably better than that little car we drove in, HA. |

The woman in the cartoon, what's up with her right breast? Amazingly perky? Or is it just me? |

Perkier than her nose. Our/wife's SUV (Saturn Vue/honda engine) supposed to (close enough in the real world) get 18 city and 25 highway. Better than her Accent with a worn out engine was getting! get a Traxx if you want decent MPG and still claim to be driving an SUV. Kind of. Edited by Stubby79, Jul 16 2015, 10:51 AM.

I just looked at the Trax. I'm not sure how small it is, but it is pretty cheap and fuel efficient! I may actually look into it for the wife haha. |

Had a V12 Cadillac Sedan Deville not long ago, with the AC on I'd get 6 to 8 mpg in the city on a good day. It was lumbersome too...no idea where all that power was hiding under the hood. Did float like a cloud though

They barely put out 275-300 HP at the crank and weighed 4,000 lbs. That's why haha. What year was it? It was probably just getting tired of carrying itself around. |

Try to put it in different terms that mean the same thing but may sink in better... "The SUV will cost us twice as much in gas $$ or the same driving the Metro does." Astute observation on the common design range figures. I don't know what drive that (maybe perfesser knows?), but notice how a few manufacturer's these days are trying to sell the car by advertising "700 something mile range?" Not too many people I know would actually ever drive 700 miles non-stop, but a number that is bigger than the next guy's even when the fuel economy may be lower will still sell the folks who don't think about the practical aspect of it that much. We used to have a Jimmy that got ~20 mpg highway once I took the bug deflector off. When gas was around $4+/gallon here I did a $100 fillup once. That's some kind of special psychological beat down I prefer not to experience again for a long time. While fuel costs were painful, the trip we did to Florida with 4 of us with camping equipment, my one little bag and enough suitcases to keep 3 women from having wardrobe anxiety wouldn't have been very doable in a Metro. |

I saw a few truck commercials that would brag about "400 mile range" and such. But when you realize they had 28 gallon tanks, it really wasn't impressive. I think people caught onto that too quickly. I know people don't often go those lengths without fill ups, it was just an observation. It seems like a standard that everyone follows. As for my wife, she is complicated. We are going through a delicate period and arguing about something so trivial really isn't worth it right now. I just laughed to myself and immediately stopped listening to anything else she had to say (the sales woman). My wife decided that the car payment was too high anyway and she didn't have enough to put down. |

There's a better way to put it. If gas is $3 a gallon you can drive a Metro 50 miles for $3 (1 gallon). If the SUV gets 15 MPG then you can drive 50 miles for $10 (3.33 gallons). So, another way to look at it is "a gallon of gas" (relative) is costing $10. It is very easy for me to understand why I keep my Metro - I don't like paying $10 a gallon. |

I do the dollar per mile thing quite often; or rather, how far a dollar gets you. |

Why Are You Guys Picking On SUVS ONLY? Don't Forget About Large PICKUP TRUCKS! The SUVS Are Mostly Based Off Pickups And If You Pick On SUVS But Pardon The Pickups, You'd Be Very Foolish. Pickups Get Even WORSE MPG Than SUVS But I Feel They Are Both Bad! And That Open Pickup Bed Won't Do You Any MPG Favors Either. Being A Road Bully And Road Roger Is Very Expensive If You Ask Me. And Personally, I Can't Wait Until This Fad With These New "Knights Of The Highway" Fades Away Altogether Already! ENOUGH ALREADY!! |
