I have a very interesting cat and am wondering if he might have some bobcat or exotic of some type mixed in. His mother showed up here and had 5 kittens. They were all nice and females all were calicos of one form or another. There was a classic calico with the orange and black spots on white. There was one other male that was a light gray tabby. I gave all of them away except for one that was a darker gray/brown tabby that I kept as my own. He grew from something about the size of my thumb to an 18lb cat! He is a big solid cat and not really overweight, just BIG. His pattern is striking and spotted much like an ocelot. The other odd thing he does is if you leave any water around, be ready for it to be everywhere. You had better keep the toilet lid closed or else all the water will be all over the place. He just plays with water and is drawn to any source. I have to constantly fight this with the water bowl as he splashes around in that too. I live out in the middle of nowhere and can't see someone spending money on an exotic cat in these parts. The vet says he looks like a serval. His mother was just a standard gray tabby with white feet and belly. His tail is proportional to his body for most domestic cats. I have seen pictures of bobcat hybrids and he looks like them except his tail is normal. Maybe a bobcat bred several generations back? He is a big wimp although he looks like some wild cat wandering around. Anyone have an explanation for this? He seems different than most other cats but is really cool. Conor |

Our local animal shelter routinely checks the DNA of the shelter animals to determine the breed. Maybe ask your vet or check with your shelter and see if they do this for a reasonable fee? |

Maine Coon is a definite possibility. I'll show these to my daughter when I have a chance, she knows a lot of breeds and traits. Could just be a fluke of genetics. |

Yes- bobcats will breed with house cats... It's not all that uncommon... We had several generations of farm cats that were part bobcat.... What you will see is that the traits may not all express particularly strongly..... Here were the things I saw in them... They are fighters/hunters - not walking couch cushions.... They can be "Scruffy" looking - sometimes their ears are more pointy and have the bobcat ear look.... Sometimes they have short tails, most of the time, their tales are "Normal"... Sometimes, they have the fuzzy feet... Sometimes not... Size wise - many here are actually pretty small.. Smaller than "Normal" house cats... Behavior wise... they are "Different" than a normal house cat... More aggressive.. More "Wild" in them... they love hunting, fighting, and killing.... Sometimes, their behavior is "Weird" compared to a normal house cat - more feral... They don't usually make good "Indoor" cats - but can be fine outdoor pets.... For example - one female part-bobcat would purr and rub up against you and then start biting you - as in drawing blood biting.. She was just being "Playful" and friendly, but it freaked me out - because she would be purring and rubbing and CHOMP!!!!!. She would also sneak attack people by jumping off of the roof onto them and biting them.... We had a big tom like you are talking about (I think he may have been part coon-cat.. we found him as a stray up north)... That cat was tough and he was a fighter (He liked fighting dogs who thought they were big and tough)... He actually killed a couple raccoons and opossums along with the usual wharf rats, birds, and rabbits.... The only one in the entire family who he would listen to was Mom.... He was tame enough to pet when HE wanted petting.... Mom could pick him up, play with him, and even give him a bath - but nobody else could.... Thanks Edited by truckjohn, Jul 17 2015, 07:34 AM.

That sounds like a pretty awesome cat. I used to have a pair of toms back home that I swear must have been part Scottish Wild Cat. These boys had talons where other cats had claws. Now there is not the cool wildlife anymore back home like you get here - so all there really is to do is chase other cats. I got a really big fright one day when the bigger of the two ran out the front door and shredded - and I mean shredded - the local big fat ginger tom across the road. I guess he had been starring my cat out, pissing him off. It was so brutal - fur flying everywhere in the wind. I was scared I was going get a visit from the police and a vets bill...... |

My neighbors cat is like that with similar colors. It's like you put scaled up a regular cat by 15%. |

The body shape doesn't speak Ocelot or Serval as those cats are long and lean. Based on the pictures my daughter doesn't have a strong opinion beyond it looks like a typical tabby with a break in the stripes, making spots. Interesting to note, 2 of the grey tabbies we've had were large cats, one being really big. |
