OK, so I know this is not Geo related but you are my people. Recently got a new 4WD and am doing a river trip next week and was reading the shuttle info. Here's what it said: "The road to Sand Wash is notorious for causing flat tires. Make sure your tires are sound, have good tread, and that you have a full size spare. The spare tire needs to be able to travel 200 or more miles and donut spares are not adequate for this distance or type of travel. Regular passenger tires (4ply, “P” rated) are not adequate for this shuttle. Even tires marked with advertising like “Off Road Tracker” are often only “P” type tires." (4ply) I checked out my tires and they are indeed "P" rated (P265/70 R16). This road is apparently notorious for flats and "sharp rocks" but isn't like a rock crawler route, just a long dirt road that probably people drive too fast on. These are my tires. You off-roaders out there. Any opinions? Hoping I don't need to go spend what I would spend on a new Metro for a set of LT tires. Thing is, I leave on Tues. ![]() ![]()

They are telling you that "P" tires are for on road snow and mud or off road graded gravel roads and are not adequate for travel on the roads you are destined for. If better tires are REQUIRED then you should cancel your tour. If better tires are only RECOMMENDED then borrow a couple of extra spares and purchase a few cans of 'fix-a-flat' |

Do what the brochure says or you will be sorry. They are giving you good advise up front. If you decide to ignore their advise.......woe be unto you for not listening. |

P rated tires are for street use. LT tires are for off road use. We remove all P tires and replace them with LT tires at work. I have load range E tires on my pickup and I still push sharp rocks through the tread every few years while hunting. Ask the tire shop what the loggers run in your area and they will be the best for the rock roads. |

LT tires have way more plies (6-10) depending on the rating compared to a standard 2 ply radial. |
