Gauges change? Easy swap?; Dash cluster with tach?

Tryn Hard!!

I seem to be having issues figuring out what this thing is called lol so I'm just going to call it the gauge cluster... well I want the one with the rpm gauge that is seen in the convertibles n I think the earlier model metros... is this a simple plug n play change or something a lot more complicated. Was kind of wanting to put one as stated with the speedo and rpm gauges instead of just seeing my speed... I was told it would probably be easier and cheaper to just go to the parts store and buy an rpm gauge or something and stick it on the dash with a suction cup or something

Plug and play. Just remember to get a cluster out of a 3cyl and trade it into a 3cyl. A 4cyl into a 3cyl will not work.

Before you buy an aftermarket tach, make sure it'll work with a 3-cylinder input! Very, very few do. Equus makes a nice one.

A 96 or 97 will work but you will have to change the resistance for the tach to read correctly. The 98 up 4 cylinder will not work.

When you think of all the times we've talked Brandon through doing something to his car, do you really want to try to explain how to convert a 4 cylinder cluster to work on a 3 cylinder car to him?

Brandon, to keep it simple, make sure that the cluster is the same shape as yours, early squarish ones won't fit, and comes from a car with the same number of cylinders. Some of the indicator/ warning lights might end up a little wonky due to changes over the years, but most of it should work correctly if it's the same shape as your cluster.

Maybe free has been inspired by the title sequence to Star trek... "To boldly go where no man has gone before..."

That, or the old Andy Williams song... "To dream... the impossible dream..."

I'm glad I'm from the Netherlands. I only had to adjust a trim pot to make a 4 cyl cluster work in my 3 cylinder.

Sorry MMM, I didn't mean it that way.

Brandon if you want the cluster with a tach, Look for one that is already in a 3 cylinder car. That is a simple of a swap as you can get.

I understand you were making a factual statement, but the can of worms you would open if he went out and got one would be large. That is an advanced modification that should only be attempted by someone that understands everything involved. While Brandon is clearly not an idiot, I would hesitate to call him an advanced mechanic or repair guy.

I think I do pretty good for 17 lol, I wouldn't expect to be called an advanced mechanic or repair guy, nor have I ever attempted to call myself one. I am slowly learning and figured it is better to ask before I got myself into trouble, as long as it is a few screws n unhook cables n hook back up I should be fine.

Brandon, just remember to unplug the speedo cable first at the tranny! After that it's a few screws. Two nuts for the steering column (makes things easier) and a little more room to work. After that it's gravy.
