Two Vs three wire CTS (Coolant Temp Sensor); i have two different ones!

Hello everyone,

I am familiar with the two wire CTS in the Throttle Body. But I received a head from eBay (that ended up cracked, but that's another story!). anyway it came with the distributor and the thermostat housing. This housing has a three with CTS. The following wires were on the connector included with it:

Yellow With white stripe
Green with Black Stripe
Grey with White stripe.

These colors correspond to the older CTS color wires in the TB (1992 geo metro in this case) and the dash temp gauge one (Yellow with White) on the thermo housing. What year did this change occur? I haven't been able to find anything on forum or internet about this! just wondered. it's interesting that it was moved to there in some later year....

Three wire was used on 97 and newer.

Three words that should never be used alone when referring to Metro components without expecting confusion...

"Coolant Temperature Sensor."

You can't say "it" and "CTS" in the same sentence without clarifying which "CTS It" you are referring to, since there are three components on the 94 and earlier with the words "Engine Coolant Temperature..." in the name. Then there's the Radiator Fan Thermostat switch in the thermostat housing that is the only component that was named in a way that shouldn't be confusing when it's proper name is used.

"Number of wires" or wire colors also can't be reliably used to distinguish the different components.

95 was sort of a bast--d oops! I mean oddball year in whcih some locations of the components started to change.

In 96 when OBD II arrived the system changed to a single "Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor" on the thermostat housing that combined the functions of all the previous configurations, with one signal going directly to the gauge, and the other going to the PCM, which then controls the radiator fan and AC shutoff directly.

Still working on the graphics for the 95 and the 96+, and hope to have them finished up after we get back from the MN meet.
