Hey All, I'm working on my '92 4 door... I've already gone to the 13" rims and I'm using the acorn nuts to hold them on... But it's time to seriously start thinking about new rotors and drums for inspection... Sooooo, I'm thinking what a perfect time to look into making this thing stop a little better in general and make it safer all the way around... I searched around and didn't have much luck finding anything, though I'm sure it's out here someplace... What I'd really like to do is upgrade the front and rear to a true 13" (or maybe even 14"??) bolt pattern with larger rotors... Are vert parts a direct swap (including hubs and calibers as well as drums and wheel cylinders?? If not, how far back would I have to chase it?? Is there an "easy affordable" rear brake swap to put discs back there instead of drums?? I'm not so much looking for high performance slotted racing style stuff, it's a daily driver with a 1.0L, and not to under appreciate the value of stopping, but I'm more concerned with the stresses of cornering without braking Meaning my primary concern is upgrading the bolt pattern and if that involves swapping out enough parts, then why not use discs instead of drums... Even a link to an old post would be appreciated... Thanks |

Lots of threads, lots of info, lots to read here; Googled "Brake Upgrade" link Rear drums are fine, although there is a GT rear disk swap but the parts are hard to come by. |

Convertible brakes are the easiest swap to bigger brakes with the proper lugs and nuts for your 13" wheels. GT brakes are even bigger with disks in the rear, but it's a more difficult swap and, as Metromightymouse pointed out, harder to find. Our rear brakes don't do very much, I wouldn't worry about them, convertible front brakes and just the rear drums themselves (for the studs) is the most sensible upgrade. |

Or get the hubs, rotors and calibers from a newer model. They have the ventilated disks and 12mm studs. There's no need to worry about the bolt pattern. 4x4.5 is a very common pattern used on lots of different cars. The 12mm studs are the thing. Acorn nuts on a 10mm stud will only take you so far ...

Awesome... yes, those 10mm studs scare the dog dukie outta me... I mean the thumb sized front spindle I get over, but hey, enoughs enough... lol... Thanks guys... PS I try to use my brakes as little as possible anyway, a layover from racing sprint cars for years I guess, but we all need to slow down sometime... |

If you can't find a convertible near you, the Suzuki Swifts had the same upgraded brakes.

Thanks, I didn't realize that even the sedan came with 13", that's some good info... Even though I think the Swifts are more rare than the convertibles... lol |

That google search link seems to work a lot better than the forum search, at least as far as significance to what I'm looking for... Thanks for the turning me onto that... |

Sedan rears are a different style of brake than the hatchbacks. Bigger drums. If you find a hatchback with upgraded brakes, all you have to switch is the drum itself. If you used sedan rears you'd have to switch entire assemblies. Around here, the 'verts are rarer than Swifts, as far as I've noticed. Yeah, we fully acknowledge that our built-in search function is crap. So you just go to google, search for: site:geometroforum.com [thing you are searching for] For example, site:geometroforum.com Ecomudder (If you wanted to find threads about Johnny Mullet's Geo Metro mud truck.) |
