Stuck Emergency breaks

Our 1993 Geo Metro has been parked for a long time. Unfortunately it was parked with the emergency break on. I released the handle but the breaks are still applied. We tried to push the car and the rear wheels slid instead of turned.

Has anyone dealt with this before?

I assume there is nothing to do but jack it up and try to see what is stuck?

Thanks

If the brake shoes are rusted to the drums, you will play hell trying to get them off. If you can find a pry bar that fits into one of the wheel openings you should be able to jack the wheel off the ground and break it loose by standing (jumping?) on the bar. THEN take it apart and fix it.
