Original radio locked; Error code

I have an original factory AM/FM/cass. radio with the "Theft Deterent" feature in my '93 Metro vert. Had to clean the white crud off the positive battery terminal with my stiff wire brush. Now my radio has a display message that says "Err9" on it. I have tried:

--removing the positive battery wire again
--removing the positive & negative wires
--pushing the 1 & 4 button on the radio at the same time (like the owners manual says)

None of these has helped get it going again.
Do I need the radio serial number off the back to get some unlock code from a dealership?
I'd love to keep this radio because the Geo logo on there looks so cool.

I know the feeling, I like my stock radio as well. I would try disconnecing the radio and allowing it to sit for a while. Might "reset" things.

I haven't read much into the article, but it mentiones 4 digit codes and "locked" Geo radios! :thumb

Edit: It would help if I included a link! :lol http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=90513

Procedures for determining factory backup unlocking codes are in the FSM. I just called the phone number and it's still active! :thumb

I was a bit concerned it may be too old since it says "this procedure requires a tone dialing telephone..." :rofl

However, the process requires a "Dealer Parts Codes" to be entered, so I would suggest taking your car to a dealership (with your title in hand so they know the car and radio is yours) and nicely ask them if they can provide you with that number or get the backup code for you on the phone.

Not so fast

I'm pretty sure your radio genuinely has an error. If it was in thief mode, it would say "LOC". Getting codes from the dealer won't help.

How long did you leave it without power? My only suggestion would be to leave it for a long time, like overnight. You don't have to unplug the battery. Just pull the radio fuse. It's on the fuse box under the dashboard, by your left foot. There are two columns of fuses. Radio should be the second one down on the right hand column. See this post:

fuse boxes :/

If that doesn't fix it, you could probably find another at a junkyard. That's where I got mine. They usually cost about $20. I like the stock radio look, too. :) The neon-spaceship-disco-party style that every aftermarket radio comes with... not so much. :shake

Good point. :thumb

Every once in while I seem to have a need to demonstrate a somewhat less than a tremondous grasp of the obvious... :smackface

Through a lot of reading of Googled results it looks like it is possible that the code is that the radio is locked, but that is far from sure. There are a couple of techniques to get the radio to give the code, depending on model and year. Once the radio gives the codes you call the number mentioned above and enter the code the phone gives you. The problem is going to be if it won't let you enter anything. You might test and see if it will let you input a couple of numbers, and if it does, then try to obtain the anti theft code.

the last time i went to a chevy dealer for an ignition key after i lost it, the rat bastards charged me $16 for a key blank and $32 to get the code for their automated cutter, they also got me for sales tax and a shop supplies fee!

it might be easier to just buy an aftermarket radio at walmart. :hmm

I think scratchpaddy may be on to something, since the FSM says when locked the radio will display "LOC." :hmm

And to use the phone number you have to have a Dealer Parts Code, which you have to be a GM Dealer to have. t3ragtop could very well be right and they may want to charge to get it unlocked, but you'll never know until you ask. And it may be cheaper than a new radio to keep your original unit.

there must be 93 stock radios without this security feature. I have had about 30 metros, never ever seen one myself. can you find one with out the security feature? I will look around and see what I have, but don't generally save stock radios.

Can you still go to Chevy dealers for Geo parts? I have a Chevrolet dealer in town, and I have frequently wondered this.

If you end up buying a new head unit, you can always swap the internals over between the two if they're indentical.

I knew getting a new radio was always an option, but because the one I have says "Geo", it makes it extra special in my book.
If I end up replacing this one, I'd rather have another stock OEM radio to go in.

They are frequently available on eBay for wildly varying amounts. You can also post in the wanted section and someone may come up with one for you.

And hopefully, if your solution is to get a replacement OEM radio, you won't get one where the previous owner wasn't one of those 1 in 100,000 people who activated the LOCK feature... :O

At least ask a dealership what they may or may not charge to help you get it re-programmed if it isn't an error unrelated to the LOCK feature. It still may be cheaper than getting a new one.
