Won't stay running without holding the key in place

My newly acquired 94 Automatic 2 door Metro is having trouble staying running. Once it does it runs fine, but getting it to stay on is becoming problematic.
It starts fine, has new starter replaced last week. It has a new engine too. But when I let go of the key it just stops running. It's almost like it's snapping back too far in the ignition switch. Is that possible?
If I start it and then hold the key in the on position it stays running just fine, but I can't shift or steer while holding the key.
Do I need to have wiring replaced? Talk to the mechanic who replaced the starter? (potentially problematic as I was out of town at the time)
Any help or ideas are appreciated.

Problem is with ignition switch or the key cylinder being worn.

Disconnect ignition switch from key cylinder. Use a small flat screw driver to cycle through run position, crank engine, then back to run position...does it happen again? Inspect switch and repair or replace.
Test the lock cylinder using your key, it should feel positive stops in each position, and
