OK - here is the story, I broke the key to Mello Yello - NOT IN THE IGNITION. I called Chevy, they said they had the key in WV, so I ordered it on Saturday. I call today to see if the keys are in - they said Chevy could not 'process' the order. So, how can I get a key for this car?? I would prefer not to have to replace the ignition assembly (RockAuto: $115) by dismantling the steering column. Crap |

The lock on the passenger side door has a number on it. Take it out and take it to a lock smith and he will fix you up. |

Mine was broken in the ignition for almost 2 years. Last week I finally took it to a local lock smith. 20 minutes and $27 (including 3 key copies) and he had the broken part removed from the ignition, and the pieces were then used to cut into a new perfect working master key. Works great and now I can get into my trunk and lock my doors. I tried doing a VIN cut at a dealer but it failed as the car was older than '93 and they couldn't guarantee a match. BTW a VIN cut did work well on both '93 cars I needed keys for (Metro and a Tracker). Edited by doviatt, Sep 1 2015, 03:04 PM.

Of course that is assuming the passenger side door lock or the ignition has not been changed and is the original on the car. http://geometroforum.com/single/?p=937187&t=4464045 |

Sometime, for reasons unknown, I panic like a Metro newbie. I took the two pieces of the broken key to a locksmith, $22 dollars later I had two new keys. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. I got the Vert off of the ramps, drove it to Arby's and back. It's purring nice. Forgetting one's meds for just one day can really make one squirrel... ...of course, its not crazy when the government really is beaming SHF radio wave from space into your brain. Your other alternative could have been to pull the ignition cylinder off the steering column, separate the rotary switch from the back of the cylinder. Now you can use a screwdriver to turn the rotary switch to start the car and the steering column lock will be disabled so you can actually steer too. Don't worry about it getting stolen in this condition only another Metro junkie would know how to work the switch and they're pretty trustworthy... I did this on mine for a few days until I could get to the locksmith. |

I went to a True Value Hardware to get a replacement key cut and after 4 tries that wouldn't work in the lock the guy gave up. Is there something special about our keys or locks?

I got a couple that had the plastic covered heads and it extended too far to allow the key to fully engage the ignition. Had to grind it back to make it work. Might check that the head isn't in the way. |

Something special about the key cutter. You need a locksmith that knows what he is doing instead of a jackleg hired off the street that has no clue about keys. Even a jackleg should be able to duplicate a key though, nothing special about it. |

If you take a worn out key in to duplicate you are going to get a worn out copy and may not work right. If you take out the pass. side door lock and they use the code it will be cut to factory specs and should work like new. Also if you do it this way you should put one new key away to use for copying in the future. Ken.............. |
