I purchased my 92 Geo Metro a couple of months ago. I noticed that a couple of the lights in the dash were out, and with what happened with one of my other cars a few years ago was worried that the check engine light may be out. I pulled the dash and the speedometer cable, figured out what as going on with the lights (missing a bulb holder) and put the dash back in. When I've been driving the speedometer flips out and acts like the connection isn't 100% in and clicks like it's not fully connected, even though I've checked both sides of the connection and both sides are snug. I don't know how I'm reattaching the connectors wrong. Any tips on how to figure it out? As there's not a lot of slack I can't look to see what's going on. Thanks!

what is the shape of the cable end that sticks out a little from the connector (Square? Rectagular?) I would try to rotate the cable a little and then try to connect it again) the shape of the cable might have to match up with whatever it is going into inside the instrument cluster- |

Square. I have both connectors installed correctly (the one that goes into the engine can only go one of two ways with the notch) and the one that connects to the cluster is on tight as I can tug on it and it won't come off, so I'm assuming it's at least making a connection as the odometer is working fine, unless that's powered by something else. Is the speedometer needle just shaking around? Maybe worse at lower speeds? That is usually an indication of friction between the cable and the sheath. Try lubricating it, or maybe replacement is necessary |

It can also be that the cable is bent too much somewhere along its path. Try pushing it in towards the cluster from the engine compartment. Edit - or pulling it out. What you want is the easiest bend you can achieve. Edited by Metromightymouse, Sep 24 2015, 05:44 AM.
