A question for fellow "Cable Cutters"; Has anybody tried one of these things?

I'm quite sure there are many folks in here that have gotten fed up with Cable TV bills and have cut the cable with varying degrees of success. I'm always on the hunt for more free content....I got an antennae for local channels, have a Roku and a Sling TV account, Amazon Prime, Hulu & Netflix too.
I ran across this thing the other day and am thinking about getting it and canceling all of my paid online subscriptions. Has anybody tried it?

We only have Netflix and $50 a month internet. I've converted over to watching mostly YouTube broadcasts or shows that play on the broadcaster's webpage the next day.

As for the jailbroken/cracked/unlocked/whatever you want to call it Firestick, I know many people who enjoy it. It really is simple for the less tech savy folks. If you know anything about torrents, it is essentially the same thing but with updated data repositories and the ability to stream it rather than download and replay. Really though, for the price on that site, I would go for it. I know about 30 people with them and they are all pleased. We have a local guy that does the unlocking here. They all have the USB thumb drive version.

The only reason I haven't purchased one myself is because I know how to get movies already and our Netflix is supplied for free. You seem like you have a ton to gain from the Firestick though. I highly recommend it.

I like the chromecast cause if you wanna watch most shows there are sites if you just Google them.

For example that rick and Morty show is on kisscartoon.me.

Other shows are on other sites. Streaming pirated content isn't illegal, only if you upload personally you'll get those letters. The app called "popcorntime" let's you stream pirated(torrent sites) movies/shows instead of downloading. Many many ways to cut the cord.

Chromecast is just like the Firestick. The unlocked Firestick is more user friendly. Like I said, if you are tech savy there is no reason you can't do this all from a PC. I have a PC hooked up to my living room TV ($50 unit) with a wireless keyboard/mouse ($20) and I watch a bunch of stuff.

By the way, Rick and Morty is awesome.

I've been streaming from my Nexus 7 to a chromecast myself. Not all sites will stream directly to a chromecast. You gotta download a media player app. I've been trying to get Plex to stream but I can't figger it out grrrrrrrrr. Same with Kodi, which is what this jailbreaked firestick seems to be using.
It seems I would need to get a laptop or a pc, PLUS have some tech smarts to make em work on the big screen. Or get one of them jailbreaked firesticks. I had hoped someone had bought one and could give some feedback.
BTW, Popcorn Time was great! Streamed lotsa movies with that, thru my nexus to my chromecast. But it was recently taken offline.

sorry goat, but this is absolutely incorrect information.

under the digital millenium act you are liable to federal charges, 5 years in prison, and up to $10,000 in fines plus restitution for illegally streaming, downloading, recording, or viewing any media including audio, video, or printed material which is copyrighted.

if you steal cable, there's a wire running to your house that connects you to the crime. if you stream media, your internet connection's ip address connects you to the crime. if you connect to any internet site which stores and/or distributes copyrighted media you are at risk of being busted and sent to the gray bar hotel.

just so you guys know...... accessing copyrighted material over the internet without express permission or a valid subscription opens you up to charges under the digital millenium act. :news

that includes a jail broken fire stick. ;)

What got me 1st interested in this came from a recent visit to the State Fair. A company had a booth set up and was running demos on a box they were selling. It was pre loaded with software and would let ya stream all sort of stuff. It seemed too good to be true, plus it cost $350.
So I wrote down the company name, did some research and found out about Plex & Kodi. It seemed the were running their boxes off those programs (same as them firesticks).
I tried running them on my tablet & streaming to a big screen with no success (yet) I am a cyber dummy. Then I found out about these firesticks.
Illegal.....maybe? One step ahead of the law....probably.

A lot of people are cord cutters, and for some reason they always talk about it. It's like people who are vegan, atheist or a crossfitter. They all thing everyone cares.

/end of my mini rant

Yeah I would totally get rid of cable if you didn't think you needed it. You can always call them and tell them you want them back if you decide you don't like the cable free life.

There are numerous reasons that would make someone want to cut the cable with cost/value being a main reason. Lotsa people are doing it & cable companies are steadily loosing market share every day. Technology is advancing, new ways to view, thousands of available channels, world wide live content, any special interest you can think of from pie making to porn, interactive programs etc etc.
As for me talking about cutting the cable, that is just the beginning and by itself is no more noteworthy than if Blanco here was talking about cutting his toenails!
Its what happens after its cut that is of interest ( to me anyways). Alternate ways to enjoy that window to the universe.....preferably for free of course.

I think my mom is crazy for paying Comcast $300+ every month for cable, internet, and phone. Of course, I think that people that pay $200+ a month for cell phones is outrageous as well. Not to mention my 70 some year old grandparents, that won't touch a computer, and don't have anything to do during the day other than read the paper and watch TV/movies. They are probably the only reason that we still have cable at our house.

It it were just me, I'd get a digital converter box with an antenna on the roof, a $20 a month basic local calling landline, and $5.50 a month dial-up (550access.com) for basic web browsing and e-mail. Now, I don't think that my girlfriend would let me get away with that... :lol No way I'd ever pay a cable company. Worst case, I'd subscribe to Comcast basic (3 mbps) or DSL and stream regular-def Netflix as a cable alternative, with the converter box for local channels.

What a shame! Totally not what Tim Burners Lee had in mind.

You even have to purchase a subscription to view on-line articles in the local paper today... :shake

It's funny you posted this, because Youtube just announced they are doing a program that you can pay 10 dollars a month and not see any ads. I have no idea how that will pan out.

Paid content might very well mean watching a 30 second add. And as sure as the sun will rise in the east, there will be folks that figger out how to bend, break or circumvent the law, exploit grey areas and supply people with what they want.
