pat, thanks for posting those pics. a series of laptop failures over the last 10 years has put my pics of car mods like that in less than accessible locations. i still have a pretty good recollection of projects i've read about over many years. when i explain some of that verbally, it doesn't have the same impact as an image. the rear strut housing modification shown in that pic actually looks to be a good job. the problems that some of the guys have had when using the coil overs are pretty severe. on the rear end, all of the weight of the car and the dynamic forces come to bear on that thin steel at the top of the strut tower. it usually ends up with a rear strut punching out the top mounting area. the oem design has the spring between the body and the control arm with the strut damping the end of the fulcrum. that arrangment moves the supporting location from the thin steel at the top of the rear strut mount to a beefed up structural area under a frame rail. personally, i went from the hotbits coil over kit right to the kyb gr2/ h&r sport springs. i had experimented with cut springs and really slammed lowering making very careful and scientific records of g forces and body angles on every permutation of suspension alterations. my latest suspension iteration even has tweaked caster and upper camber correction plates on the front and old joe indi's track springs on it. it handles great, rides like a log wagon. i plan on removing the track suspension on my red twincam vert and replacing it with the kyb/ h&r sport springs in april. i'll have strut assemblies ready to go in and i'll remove the track suspension front strut assemblies and rear springs as a "quick kit." after this season driving on streets that had major construction going on i'm ready to sacrifice the handling for a bit less compliance. if you want to see any of my suspension work you can look in my blue monster vert and red resto-rod vert project threads. there are pretty pics and comments that might give you an idea.

People who want to ruin their car so that it is no longer usable just because they think it looks cool usually have the skills and knowledge to do it themselves. 2" is a pretty extreme drop if you want the car to still work when you're done. The frame of the car does not have the structural integrity to put up with the springs necessary to go any lower. Neither do the disks in your back, that damage would not be as instantly catastrophic, but would for sure be a problem 30 years down the road. |

you might think that these cars can be lowered 4" but i will tell you that doing that induces some extreme camber that can't be corrected without considerable effort and expense. more than 1.4" drop and you can crash the valving in the struts. the 1.4" drop you get with h&r sport springs is the limit of the warranty on kyb struts. why not bag the car? i'm pretty sure that you can fit an inflatable bag type suspension. |
