For the basics of how to remove panels, etc, to access the speakers themselves, see my other thread here:

How To Replace Rear Speakers; 1995 - 2001 Hatchback

Now that we've got that out of the way, let's move on!

First, you're going to need some 6"x9" speakers.

:drool Blaupunkt GTx 693? Those'll do!

Next, you'll need to sketch out where your speaker is going to go...

...yeah. ^o) That looks about right!

So put on your safety glasses B-) and grab your cutting implement of choice (Dremel with a cut-off wheel, grinder with a cutoff wheel, hacksaw? Whatever! Do what you want!) and get to work!

Please note that part of the procedure involves you cutting into a reinforcing cross-member thing.
This does not particularly worry me, as:
A. The piece of metal removed is quite small, and
B. The metal of the speaker housing is approximately 3 times as thick as the metal you removed - odds are you actually reinforced the car by installing the speaker! :lol

You might not have to do this if you had shallow-mount speakers, but I don't know. :dunno
These are what we had; these are what we used. Moving on!

So now, we test fit. How's it look?
Posted Image
:hmm Pretty good, I think. Drill some holes for the screws and you should be ok.

But will the panels still fit? :hmm

Yes - barely! The tweeters stick out pretty far on this particular model of speaker.
Also you can see the tweeter through the grill! Crap! Shiny speakers you can see might attract thieves! :scared

So mix up some epoxy...
Posted Image
And grab some concealing material (this used to be a t-shirt)...
Posted Image
And finesse it all into place nicely...
Posted Image
Yeah! Now trim the excess fabric away...
Posted Image
And now you have...

Stealth.

To wire them up, you can either buy the wiring harness adapters listed in the other thread, or...

Make your own! I just cut the factory connector off an OEM speaker, and soldered the aftermarket speaker wires to that, and voilĂ !
Homemade speaker adapter harness.

Kind of wondering if something similar can be done in the doors.

Erm. Maybe, kinda.
I am fresh outta 6"x9"s :lol
Like... Maybe if you don't use the black plastic speaker mount pod... you might be able to hack away part of the door, and mount it to the door itself.
However, if you did, it might protrude so far back into the door, that it would get in the way of the window mechanism.

Good read! I replaced my rear 5x8 speakers with 6x9. Only thing I had to do was trim out the hole a bit bigger for the 6x9.

...what did you replace the speakers in?
Can't be a Metro, I'm not aware of any Metro that came with a 5"x8" speaker.
1989-1994 had 4" round speakers, 4"x6" in the rear if it had a parcel shelf.
1995-2001 had 6.5" round speakers. (Or if set up at the dealership instead of the factory, 5.25" speakers mounted to the door panels instead of behind them, as was proper.)

I took off the side panel, there was a sheet of wood attached to the frame. Found 5x8 speakers in them. 93 geo metro hatchback. When I get a chance I'll take a picture.
