On my 96 4/3 hatch (68,000mi) I bought this car with a P0134 code on her about a year ago from an old lady and she told me that code has been on for 10,000mi and it comes and goes. I did a vacuum test on the engine and the pressure doesn't return and it now has a P0420 code. So I buy a new Bosch Bank 1 HO2S and nothing changes code P0134 comes back after 45mi of driving so I checked the voltage for the male end that goes back to the ECM which was all good. Then we hooked up the Snap-On reader to it and the new o2 sensor failed 3 out of the 10 tests it ran on it. So I called a dealership and got a Denso o2 sensor (71.99$) and the new OEM catalytic converter (175.99$) in the hopes that the OEMs will be better. But here is what I've determined that with the P0134 code and the failed tests that the o2 is bad and with the P0420 code and the vacuum test that the Cat. got clogged as the byproduct. If the new cat. and o2 sensor don't fix these codes I have no idea what to do. Please if you have any knowledge to share on these subjects please feel free to leave a comment
~thanks :rocker :cheers :metro2

:hmm Huh?

P0134 is for the front O2 sensor and P0420 is for the rear. First thing I would check is grounds. Unscrew, clean and reconnect all ground wires, the ones under the intake manifold are the most critical. Also, unplug and reconnect ever connector you can get your hands on. 20 year old cars have connector issues. P0134 says front O2 sensor inactive, it's either a dead sensor or it's got a bad connection. Dead sensors don't "come and go", bad connections do. The rear sensor works by comparing its readings to the front sensor, so until the front one is fixed don't believe anything the rear one is saying.

P0420 is for that Cat. I replaced it with an oem cat and the P0420 code is gone. Now on to the P0134 is back after I just changed it with an Denso oem O2 and after 160mi this morning the sensor is flatlined. You said the O2 sensor has a ground under the intake? Could you tell me exactly where b/c I'll check that next. I need to fix this car b/c it's my girlfriends and I don't need her to have any problems (96 4/3 68,000mi) thank you for your help

This is from the 96 fsm. For the 1.3. Read through it before doing the steps in the procedure.
